The Color Silver

Of all the colors in the world, silver is the most unusual as it is the only color

that can only exist in a dynamic state, that is, in interaction with reflected light. When we talk of the color silver, we associated it with its metallic shine rather than the actual color beneath it. It is the shiny effect caused by the brightness of the materials surface angled against a light source. Take out the shiny effect or the dynamism from most things that had a silver color and what will be left are things with grayish colors, but definitely not with the silver as we know of it.

In art, to paint something silver, one normally will not be able to find it in normal pigments. A metallic paint that glitters had to be used to produce the needed effect. Even on a computer, the metallic color of silver can only be produced by stimulating the needed effect.

As dynamic as the state of the color silver is, so is the meanings that are attached to it. Like the color, what ever the meaning it coveys, it is connected with a certain reflection as nobility, grace, sleekness, purity, distinguish achievement, etc.

So whatever trait it reflects, the beauty and uniqueness of silver may lie a lot on its dynamism. Take for example a cloud with a silver lining. The silver lining of the cloud is produced by the reflection of the sunlight. And even if we take a much simpler example like a sterling silver necklace given to you by some one who loves you. Is not the value reflected by the love that surrounds it? So it seems that once you take a way the dynamism of silver, all will be left is something gray. And I think that it also applies to many things in life.
