The Consequences Of Yaz Blood Clots

Yaz or drospirenone is the name under which one of the most popular combined oral contraceptives is marketed in the U.S

. The fourth generation birth control pill is prescribed to prevent pregnancy and to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years old. Yaz was first approved in 2006 and became only within two years the best sold contraceptive in the U.S. Its popularity is partially the result of some very promising but not necessarily true TV commercials. The manufacturing company released in 2007 a commercial, suggesting that the drug would be efficient in treating all premenstrual symptoms. Although the commercial was later withdrawn as a result of the FDAs warning letter, the drug remained highly popular.

As tens of millions of women were using it all over the world, many of them were unaware of the real risks involved. Years had to pass and some very troubling cases had to be made public to realize the risks. Yaz like all birth control pill has a number of side effects. The most common ones are mild and common with those of other oral contraceptives. They include: headaches, weight gain, menstrual irregularities, irritability and mood changes. However these are not the really worrying ones. The reported death cases related to Yaz use were caused by heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism.

These conditions develop as a result of blood clots. All oral contraceptives, which work based on two hormones estrogen and progesterone, have the capability of developing excessive blood clots. The normal development of blood clots is part of the bodys healing process. The blood becomes sticky and starts clotting at the sides of an external or internal wound, preventing massive blood loss. However when the blood clots more than it is needed, the results will be quite different.

One of the serious medical conditions that can develop in case of excessive blood clotting is deep vein thrombosis. The clots are formed inside veins mostly in the legs, causing patients to experience pain in the affected area, swelling and redness. If such signs occur, patients are advised to seek medical assistance as soon as possible, because the condition left untreated can have severe consequences. Unfortunately only around 50% of individuals with DVT experience any symptoms. The other 50% might not even know about the existence of a problem.

If DVT is not treated, the blood clots can eventually break down and spread across the circulatory system. In case they reach the lungs, the affected individual might notice difficulty breathing. The condition called pulmonary embolism can easily be fatal. If however the clots reach a coronary artery and manage to block it, heart muscles will be affected. They will begin dying because of lack of oxygen and the result will be a heart attack. If a patient is unlucky enough for his blood clots to reach an artery in the brain, he will suffer a stroke. All the above mentioned conditions, in case they do not cause the death of a patient, will probably result in permanent disabilities.

That is why women who are mostly at risk of developing blood clots are advised by the manufacturing company to avoid the medication. The risk groups include: women older than 35, heavy smokers, individuals with high cholesterol levels, hypertension and heart conditions and of course all patients who had previous blood clotting problems. If women from these groups are already taking Yaz, they should be extremely careful regarding potential symptoms of excessive blood clotting. Possible symptoms are the followings: sudden deterioration of vision, sudden weakness of the arms or legs, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, a squeezing pain in the chest, unexplained shortness of breath and pain that extends to the neck, arms and back. If any of these symptoms becomes obvious immediate emergency care can be the lifesaving option.
