The Correlation Between Extreme Levels Of Sound And Ringing In The Ears
There are several instances when John Bloom thinks he might go mad with the tweets of crickets in his head
. Sometimes it sounds like a whistle. At other times, the sound is similar to bleats from an electronic gadget The funnier sound is like the hiss of air rushing out of a balloon.
Life has become a harrowing experience for this man from California who gets a constant feeling of meaningless sounds being created in his ear and keeping him in a state of confusion. He dreads every single day that he has to live.
Loud sounds, whether in the form of music or sounds at the workplace, cause a gradual hearing loss. Tinnitus is the result of ageing, besides other factors.
The American Tinnitus Association reports that the number of people in America who have had either sporadic or permanent tinnitus is about 50 million. About 12 million people are badly affected by tinnitus while over 2 million have lost their hearing almost completely.
Bloom is in a very bad shape with regard to his hearing. For him, tinnitus has made living itself bothersome and it saps him of all his energy. According to doctors, the root cause of tinnitus in his case was his attending a rock concert two years ago.
Bloom emphatically states that his presence at a particular concert damaged his hearing beyond repair, but does not want to name the band or the venue. During the concert he was careful enough to wear foam ear plugs all the time. The music was so loud that he felt like adjusting his earplugs and while he was doing so, a screeching sound that hit him permanently damaged his ear.
From that day, his ear has been paining continuously and he has become extremely sensitive to noise.
As his hearing deteriorated further, he started perceiving a strange and continuous noise in the background. Tinnitus, was the sad verdict within just a few days of doctors examining him for the first time.
His doctor told him what the ear, nose and throat specialist was to tell him later, that tinnitus just isn't curable. The patient has to take treatment that reduces the severity of the ringing to some extent and, the symptoms that remain, have to be endured.
Antidepressants and sleeping pills, used as a combination, do help in lessening the harsh effects of tinnitus. Bloom has become a firm believer in purely natural remedies. He is on a diet rich in zinc, magnesium and Vitamin B12 to hasten his recovery, and he also takes melatonin to get some good sleep.
In the case of some therapies, the brain is made to obliterate any memory of tinnitus.
Neuromonics employs electronic devices to create a soft white sound to counter the maddening noises. While timely treatment does help to some extent, more patients are being added every day. Whatever the solution, tinnitus just doesn't seem to go away.
