In principle, irrigation of crops is carried out by spraying water through an elevated structure. Another kind of sprinkler irrigator is a solid set system whereby the mechanism is positioned in pre-determined locations in the farm field where irrigation is most needed. Prime component is a pump set that allows flow of water through a hard hose. A travelling irrigator on the other has the sprinkler mounted to a wheeled mechanized carrier so that irrigation can be performed throughout the field where irrigation needs to be done. With a pivot irrigation system, the sprinkler moves in a circular motion and rotates around a pivot. Most farmers in Tasmania prefer to use this type of centre pivot irrigation system which also considered the most efficient among the sprinkler types that is specifically for use in large scale farming.

With the gravity flow distribution, water is distributed at the at the field level at a free surface by force of gravity. It is the oldest form of irrigation system and is still commonly practiced throughout the world. This type is also referred to as flood irrigation which is said to be the most inefficient among the three types owing to the fact that irrigation water cannot be restrained.

The cheapest form of irrigation system is the drainage flow distribution. This irrigation needs no machines to operate and just employs water using its own force to irrigate the field. Canals are dug to serve as catch basin for the water to perform as irrigator along strategically dug up shallow ducts.

Most irrigator manufacturers in Tasmania are in agreement that the most efficient tool for irrigation are the sprinklers type which are the most resorted to for use in large scale farming. Among those most preferred by farmers for use in irrigation agriculture are the travelling irrigators, hard hoses, pump sets and the centre pivot irrigation. Manufacturers of irrigation equipments, coordination with the government, are working as one in an effort to further develop the irrigation system of Tasmania and help the agricultural sector as major contributor to the growth of the economy.
