Heavy panting
Staring, glazed eyes
Anxious expression
Refusal to obey commands
Warm dry skin
High Fever
Rapid heartbeat
Vomiting
Unsteadiness, staggering gait, collapsing
A deep red or purple tongue
Decrease your dogs body temperature immediately with cool (not cold) water soaked towels applied to the head, neck, and least haired part of the abdomen. Call your veterinarian
To prevent heat stress
Provide plenty of clean, fresh water at all times, change water daily. Don't let your dog play in standing water.Bacteria and parasites can breed quickly in standing water.Giardia is the most common waterborne parasite dog's contract, and it can be fatal.
Provide adequate shade and/or shelter from the sun. Dogs kept in a kennel should be provided adequate air circulation. never leave your dog unsupervised for long periods of time outside on hot days.Bring them inside instead.
Avoid exercise during hot weather or limit exercise to early in the morning or evening hours.
Hot pavement can mean hot or burned paws. Avoid walking your dog on hot pavement or roads. DON'T use booties that restrict the dog's ability to cool down by perspiring through the pads of their feet.
Baby pools filled with cool water can be fun and cooling for most dogs (use the hard plastic pool)
Fill a plastic container with water, freeze, place it in a cool spot in the yard so your dog can lay next to it and get cool, or chew on it for refreshment. Ice cubes are a good summer treat.
Keep your pet well groomed. Extremely thic hair or a lot of mats and tangles in the fur may trap too much heat. You may want to consider clipping.
NEVER LEAVE YOUR PETS IN A PARKED VEHICLE!!! The sun can raise the temperature inside your car to 50 degrees Celsius in a matter of minutes, even if the windows are rolled down.
Even with emergency treatment, heatstroke can be fatal. the best cure is prevention and Fido is relying on you to keep him out of harm's way. With some precaution, both you and your furry friends can enjoy those long, hot dog -days of summer.
