The Difference Between A Pediatric Dentist And A Regular Dentist
As a child, my parents never took me to a pediatric dentist
. I just went to a regular old dentist who didn't specialize in children or pediatric dentistry or anything like that. Look back, boy I wish they had thought to take me to a pediatric dentist instead of the general dentist they took me to. I think it might have made my experiences with the dentist much more enjoyable and much more pleasant. Don't get me wrong, my dental visits when my siblings and I were kids were absolutely memorable. However, I can't say that all of these dental memories are pleasant memories. I probably would have had a much better idea of dentists if I had gone to a pediatric dentist.
Oh, how my childhood, as well as my teeth and dental health, would have been different had I been able to visit a pediatric dentist when my siblings and I were kids. I remember one experience I had with our general dentist. I was very young, couldn't have been more than four or five, and my mother was taking us kids to our semi annual trip to the dentist, to check on our overall dental health.
Unlike a pediatric dentist, when it came to this particular dentist children was not his strongest point. Obviously. I remember being so afraid of having this big scary man in a dental mask poke his big, shiny instruments inside my mouth, all for the sake of my so called dental health. My teeth hurt, my mouth hurt, I was terrified of everything that had to do with this dentist, and I decided then and there that when it came to dentists, dentists and I just didn't, and would never mix. I dreaded going to the dentist ever since. I believe the other kids in my family hated dentist too. Had we been introduced to a pediatric dentist at this young and impressionable age, I believe we would have turned out differently.
Now that I have children of my own, I have finally discovered the wonders of a pediatric dentist. Because of my deeply ingrained fear of dentists, I still don't particularly enjoy visiting the dentist, but I understand the importance of dental health and so, every six months, I cart my children off to the local pediatric dentist.
Why do I take my children to a pediatric dentist? Because pediatric dentists know much more about kids and children than any random general dentistry clinic. Pediatric dentists expect the children coming into their dental offices to be afraid, and so pediatric dentists make it their very first priority to help these children to feel more comfortable. The first time I brought my two year old to this pediatric dentist, this wonderful dentist spent more than fifteen minutes of his time just showing my kids around the dental office, and introducing them to the dental staff, as well as the dental equipment. None of my kids have ever harbored a fear of dentists since! My pediatric dentist is wonderful!
