To the untrained eye, hatchets and axes are the same thing, but to those that use them, they are completely different. First, there is a distinct different in the head and shaft size. In addition, hatchets are very portable while axes can be difficult to carry. The designs are different also, with the shaft of an axe being different from the shaft of a hatchet by both size and structure. Finally, the weight is a tell tale sign that one is working with different tools. Since they are usually used for different jobs, hatchet, axe and others like it are all similar but the differences outlined are apparent.

The first noticeable difference is the head size. The heads of hatchets and axes are proportionate to their handles, so of course, one should be smaller than the other. A hatchet's head if narrow while with a wide cutting blade while an axe blade is roughly the same size at the shaft as it is to the cutting blade. Shaft size is also a big deal. Hatchets are usually the smallest of a group of similar tools, being about a fourth of the size of a regular axe. The lengths are designed for different jobs, the shorter handle making light chopping jobs easier. The shaft size makes a hatchet more portable than an axe because it's smaller - you can take it anywhere versus having a big bulky axe to lug around.

The shafts of hatchets and axes are structured differently as well as being a different size. Hatchets have curved handles, and the head is usually attached to the most thrust forward part of the handle. Axes have straight handles and the head is usually at a clean ninety degree angle- the curved shaft will not allow for the force and thrust behind experienced chopping, and a hatchet can be destroyed in a number of blows. Also, it is common for hatchets to have metal shafts and this will definitely not stand up to a tough chopping job.

Finally, a big difference between hatchets and axes is the head weight. Axes, of course, being the largest, are the heaviest. Hatchet heads are much lighter than this, weighing about four times less than a regular axe head. These are designed this way because they are designed for different jobs. Hand axes and hatchets are designed for light chopping, such as getting rid of bushes and small limbs while the others are designed for chopping down trees and the like. While these differences in size and shape are subtle, they are important to the kind of work that you would use it for.

Hatchets and axes are tools that have stood the test of time. Their differences are many, but their uses are primarily the same. The head size and shape makes a great difference in the way that they are used and keep jobs separate. However you use them, it's important to know of their make up so that you don't use the wrong tool and end up destroying your project, or the tool, or possibly your own body if you can't control what you are doing.
