The Difference between Rewards, Sports, and Charity Cards

The Difference between Rewards, Sports, and Charity Cards

If you have tried looking for credit cards online, you have probably noticed that they are categorised into different kinds of cards, with reward cards, sports cards, and charity cards being among the three most often listed categories. Comparing the three kinds of credit cards, you will probably have noticed that they are generally the same, or nearly the same, in terms of interest rates and fees. So what makes them different from each other?

As the categories imply, rewards cards, sports cards, and charity cards differ in the perks or extras they offer. In essence, you can look at them all as reward credit cards since you are rewarded in some way each time you use the credit card to make a purchase. However, the specific form of reward differentiates each credit card category.

Reward credit cards, in general, are credit cards that allow you to earn reward points. These reward points can then be redeemed in the form of vouchers, items, services, miles, and even as cash. The form of which the points can be redeemed depends on the specific credit card. For example, travel reward cards will allow you travel for free after you earn enough miles, while shop specific credit cards will give your special discounts to certain stores as well as allow you to earn discount cards and vouchers. Special rewards cards, called cash back cards, are credit cards which allow you to apply credit card points earned to be turned to cash and transferred to your current account.

Sports and charity credit cards are very similar in that instead of allowing you to earn reward points, they automatically donate a specific amount of money to the sports club or charity of your choice each time you use your credit card. The amount of money donated is proportional to the amount of money charged on the credit card. This donation is given at no cost to you, since in essence you are giving up your rewards in favour of giving money to the sports club or charity the credit card company has tied up with. Note though that a donation to a charity from an Irish credit card will not be tax deductible since the donation is made automatically. However, this convenience way of making a charitable donation is still a good idea since you do not have to bother saving up money to donate, nor have to go out of your way just to make a donation.
