The Differences Between Osteo And Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a long term systemic disease that uses an autoimmune mechanism to destroy the joints

. Normally, a person's immune system acts as a protective shield for the body. When the body is attacked by an external factor capable of disrupting its ordinary functions, the immune system releases antibodies to destroy it. Typically, these foreign factors are micro organisms such as bacteria, fungi and virus, dust and fibers.

Rheumatoid Arthritis tricks the antibodies into believing that healthy tissues of the body need to be attacked- deriving the term autoimmune. In the case of RA, the target area is often a thin membrane that cushions the bones in joints. It is considered systemic because RA has the ability to affect multiple joints in due course.

Sadly, RA is also categorized as a chronic disease, which means the package is meant to be long term. Quite often the signs are unseen during the early stages, till matters get complicated. Although many researches have been conducted worldwide, no one has been successful enough to pin point a definite reason for this disease. Genetic inheritance, environmental factors and infections are some of the cards on the table.

Symptoms for RA are often connected to joints and depend on inflammation. These symptoms vary from patient to patient and differ from time to time. Symptoms include, muscle and joint aches, swelling, lack of appetite, anemia, slight fever and pain after being inactive for a period of time, stiffness in the joints and surrounding muscles, especially in the morning, and limited motion of the joints and deformities. Note that this form of the disease does not usually respond to glucosamine supplements.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can also affect other organs such as the lungs, heart and skin. Rheumatoid Nodules are little lumps under the skin. This is an indication of severity. Several Factors are taken into consideration when providing treatment for RA patients. For example the status of the disease, affected organs, other health factors such as, sugar, cholesterol, and pressure, life style and last but not least, age. The prime motive of treatment is to decrease pain and inflammation, increase motion of the joints and prevent infection and related deformities. Again, glucosamine chondroitin does not help with this version of the joint disease.

Medication is given in the form of drugs that suppress pain and inflammation. However, patients are also advised to maintain a healthy life style by consuming nutritious meals and actively performing regular exercises. These exercises provide strength to the entire body and help control the weight. Fighting RA can be a painful task, psychologically and physically. Therefore educating the patient and keeping them in a stress free environment will benefit them immensely.
