The Different Aspects Of Loneliness In Men
Loneliness is an inevitable part of the human condition and everyone experiences it to some degree or another at certain junctures in their lives
. In both women and men, loneliness can occur to such a degree that normal functioning and thought processes may be impaired. Although minor episodes of loneliness are usually temporary and easily solved, there are cases that may actually require intensive professional attention.
Loneliness in men may be caused by any number of reasons and some of them may belong exclusively to the male domain. Although it can affect both women and men, loneliness is often caused by entirely different reasons across the gender lines. While this is by no means a hard and fast rule, loneliness in men is frequently caused by feelings of isolation and detachment, or the failure to meet certain societal standards or goals. These standards may even be self imposed, causing a degree of loneliness that is largely the person's own doing.
There are many sources of stress nowadays, and almost everyone is constantly under a considerable amount of pressure to conform to certain rules or to meet rigidly defined standards set by society or our peers. For many men, loneliness may be caused by the pressure to achieve some measure of success, the drive to excel, and the need to maintain a strong disposition. All of these may lead to severe resentment and feelings of insecurity. In the face of such intense pressure, many men may feel lonely even though they seemingly have all the ingredients in life necessary to prevent loneliness.
Men may also feel the pang of loneliness due to a sense of ideological or personal detachment from the people in his surroundings. When placed in an environment wherein a man has little in common with the people around him, the sense of being "alone in a crowd of millions" may become a very real and intolerable eventuality. In such a situation, it doesn't even matter that the person is surrounded by friends and/or family 24/7. With the lack of a support group composed of like minded peers, a person who has nothing in common with those around him may as well be on a deserted island alone.
For some men, loneliness may be the result of a personal loss or tragic circumstances. People who go into retirement are particularly prone to loneliness. Men and loneliness also tend to find each other with the sudden abundance of free time with nothing to do and no one to talk to.
The common advice given with regard to men and loneliness is to seek the company of others. This is indeed good advice, but the option is not always available to everyone. When you reach a certain age, you find that not everyone is available as they once were, and it could be difficult to get everyone together at the same time. Fear of or aversion to social contact may also prevent men who are lonely from seeking out the solution that would be most beneficial to them.
