The Different Types Of 21st Century Demolition Lightly Summarised
There are only a handful of ways to have a building demolished
. These range from the dangerous and showy implosion type to the newer and more environmentally friendly deconstruction. The five different types of demolition vary but can be mixed in order to make the process more safe.
The simplest and safest type is manual. This type is usually used with smaller buildings such as houses. This usually consists of a building being pulled down, which is why manual and mechanical demolition are often mixed together.
Mechanical consists of using machines to get the job completed such as; bulldozers, cranes, and excavators. One of the more common pieces of equipment used in this type is the wrecking ball. This is usually used for very large buildings that have a strong structure. All of these consist of battering the building into pieces.
One of the more controllable types is known as undermining. This takes out the important supports near the base of the building. When done correctly this is a quick method and usually the demolition is controllable to a direction that is most ideal.
The most showy type is implosion. This type does as the name states and implodes onto itself reducing the damage to other buildings around the area. The process to set up an implosion takes a very long time, usually months. It is also one that takes a long time to clean up, although many debris are caught into fabric and fencing that is placed around the main floors that have the explosives mounted in them. Many things need to be done before implosion can take place, one of them being that all the glass should be removed in case of any dangerous projectiles. Implosion is normally used as the last resort because of how dangerous it is considered.
A more environmentally safe and green way of demolition is known as deconstruction. This type is known as being opposite of the construction since it is the careful process of taking a building apart piece by piece. Using this method saves a lot of material for other projects and reduces the waste that is placed in landfills.
Demolition can come in many forms from very safe to very dangerous. A very knowledgeable and qualified person must decide what the safest way to demolish a building is. There are many other factors such as the cost but safety is always the highest concern.
