The Diseases Caused By Cigarette Smoking

Addiction to nicotine is a serious problem across the world--especially in the United

States--despite the medical research that has proven its causation of numerous diseases and cancers. There are more people getting hooked every day.

If you are one of those people--whether you got hooked yesterday or twenty years ago--you may be looking for the motivation to fight the good fight. To quit. And sometimes that motivation needs to come from fear, as twisted as they may seem.

One of the most common illnesses associated with smoking is emphysema. This is a serious lung disease which progressively gets worse with time. It progresses much faster if you do not quit smoking.

At this time, there is no cure, though there are some prescription treatments meant to alleviate the symptoms of COPD--chronic obstructive pulmonary disease--of which emphysema is a type.

But the truth is that once you have developed emphysema, which effects your ability to expel all the air from your lungs, which effects your overall ability to breathe. The deterioration is caused by toxins found in cigarettes.

You should keep in mind that emphysema can also be caused by secondhand smoke. So, as you permeate your home with smoke, you are increasing your family members' chances for contracting the disease.

After emphysema, there is, of course, the Big C: cancer. Lung cancer is the most commonly recognized cancer in connection with cigarette smoking, but tobacco, including chew, can cause oral and throat cancers as well.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among both men AND women in America. This is not a joke--and the saddest part is that it is so easily preventable. Though lung cancer is not always caused by cigarette smoke--cancer is pretty unpredictable--your risks are astronomically reduced if you never smoke at all, but you will still reduce them if you quit.

There are about 20 different types of aggressive tumors that can crop up within the lungs, but no matter what sort you have, it will form in the soft tissue surrounding the bronchi, which are the branches that form the airways of each lung.

Many people that have developed lung cancer do not have any indication of the growths until the disease is fairly advanced because its symptoms seem normal for someone who has been smoking for awhile--coughing and wheezing, for example. However, bloody mucus is a sure sign that something is amiss, so make an appointment with your doctor right away.

No matter how old you are or how long you have been smoking, it is never too late to stop. It takes persistence and support from friends and family members, but remember--even if you don't do it for yourself, you can do it to keep others in your family healthy and safe from the effects of secondhand smoke.
