The Dog Decides

The Dog Decides

The Dog Decides

I remember several years ago sitting at home in my lounge, unusually because I was feeling a bit groggy, talking to a client, Peter, who wanted some court interpretation organised.

Fortunately, I knew Peter quite well.

"Fortunately", because we had a Great Dane at the time, Ebony (guess what colour he was), who weighed a little more than I did (and the bathroom scales cringed when they saw me coming!). Well, anyway, Ebony stood up in his bed and had a good look around to make absolutely sure that he wasn't mistaken and that we were the only two there. No, he wasn't mistaken and this could only mean one thing I WAS TALKING TO HIM and this was an invitation to him to come and have one of our little rough-and-tumbles. He faltered momentarily as he considered the situation more deeply. He knew that it was definitely frowned upon to get too frisky indoors (he could easily demolish a dining room table at his most boisterous). But, no, there was no other conclusion possible this was definitely an invitation to tango! He made his decision! He accelerated out of his bed and in four bounds was already airborne and hurtling in my direction. He hit me at about seventy miles an hour and had smothered my face in slobbery licks and virtually curtailed the chance of me increasing the size of my family, before I could even agree the hourly rate for the services to be provided.

The point is that it's the dog who decides. You can spend years impressing on him the importance of following the rules and he can be quite competent at grasping what is expected of him, but ultimately it's him who weighs up the choices and makes the decision! Every time! If you manage to create a set of circumstances which is quite out of the ordinary, he'll have to consider just how this fits in with everything that he's learnt. He might be as Ebony was very good at doing the right thing and wonderfully obedient after the hours and years of training, but his intelligence and experience might not be great enough to cater with all predicaments.

Accidents will happen! And we did finally get the job and agree the rate.

Peter visited us at home some time after that.

He was just a tad wary when he first met Ebony!
