Your new mantra should be: "I will understand part of being an early bird is being lighthearted and joyful about everyday life and that the pursuit of savings is a game I will always win!"
When you are living on a fixed income, it is essential to find ways to stretch every dollar you spend. Always on the lookout for frugal, when Reader's Digest sent me information about Early Bird Specials, a book that shows you how to "take advantage of all your benefits, hidden discounts, fabulous freebies and redeemable rewards," availableI was hooked. After all, as the saying goes (if you're old enough to remember) "The Early bird gets the worm," or in this case the specials.
This book, though a bit pricey at $24.96, could save you a bundle, even if you aren't a senior.
It lists how to get savings for hotel or motel rooms, a cup of morning coffee or groceries, classes you can take on the cheap, and how to use your hobbies to create cash, also, free checking, cell phone discounts and more. There are savings for your home and car that might just as easily apply to everyone, not just seniors.
The sections of the book are organized so that you can find whatever you want to save on without reading from cover to cover, though you will probably want to anyway so you don't miss a single saving idea. While most of the tips apply to those at least 50 years or older, with the proper spin, many can be used for everyone. There are those like lowering your electric bill, by turning on lights only in the room you are in, or getting the best deals on air fares by shopping around. There are ideas to help you if you decide to make homemade instead of buying ready-made from beauty and health products to food.
Entertaining ideas, on page 58, will help you entertain with flair and on the economical side without losing your style. Ideas for entertaining on the frugal side suggest serving buffet style meals like spaghetti with meatballs, 3-bean chili, or a pot of chicken and dumpling soup for your main course.
To serve a beverage that most will enjoy and that won't break your bank try the sangria bash, as an inexpensive delicious and easy way to make a little go a long way.
Sangria
Add: Red wine, Carbonated water, sweetened with honey or orange juice, a small amount of brandy or triple sec to a pitcher full of chopped or sliced oranges, apples, peaches, pineapple or other fruit. Refrigerate two hours before serving. Add ice and stir
I would recommend this book to anyone, because the ideas shared can be adapted, in many cases to fit you as well. But especially recommend it for seniors when your budget is tight, but you have a lot of living you still intend to do. You can find your copy wherever you normally buy your books.
