The Envelope, The Greatest Method Of Communication?

It is hard to believe that something as simple as the envelope is such an indispensable product with so many uses

. You will not put a second thought in to the envelope, even though they are all around you on a daily basis, unless you actually need to use one.

The introduction of the computer and mobile phones has opened up a whole new method of communication; however this may have decreased certain elements where we would have previously used an envelope, it is still paramount for businesses and individuals alike.

The envelope itself has been in circulation for over a hundred years. It was first created by hand until the 1840s in which it became known as the readymade envelope. This revolutionised the way in which the envelope was manufactured and enabled people to be able to purchase an affordable and secure method for sending their letters and mail. Today the design is still in its basic form as it was when it was first created although there are many different styles and design of envelope readily available.

The variety of envelopes is now almost endless giving businesses and individuals a total unique solution for their needs. Primarily the envelope is divided in to two categories, personal use and businesses. The shape usually consists of three distinctive designs, triangular, square and rectangle with the size ranging of anywhere from 3 inches to 36 inches. The range of colours is amazing from shades that are pale and transparent to brilliantly bright and metallic colours. This is combined with a multitude of plain or patterned textures and a variety of materials which includes, paper, corrugated cardboard, plastic, foil, paperboard and bubble wrap.

One of the most prevalent sized envelopes is the DL size and is utilised by businesses throughout the world. Although there are many different sizes this is the most commonly used size as it is ideal for all forms of correspondence. For other forms of correspondence such as statements and invoices the Monarch envelope is favoured especially by the Americans. Smaller correspondence and the likes of invitations and greeting cards tend to use the A6 sized envelope. The A6 envelope is much more appropriate for delivering a more pleasant item rather than receiving the standard manila envelope which may contain a bill etc. The A6 envelope also has more familiar features such as a square flap or possibly a pointed flap. The smallest sized envelope out of the A series is the A2 envelope whereas the largest is the A10 size. Another popular size utilised in the A series is the A7 envelope which is primarily used for large greeting cards due to its 5X7 dimensions.

When sending more personal mail you want to ensure you are sending something more appropriate, so require a higher quality envelope. One of the best known methods is with a vellum envelope. Previously if you received a letter from your solicitor, book keeper or even bank manager then you would more than likely receive a vellum envelope. However today you are more likely to utilise these type of item when sending a wedding invitation or an announcement. The more modern vellum envelopes are created in a translucent style and are available in a vast selection of colours.

Similar to the vellum styling of transparency is the cellophane envelope. But unlike the vellum this type of clear packaging is primarily used by businesses for sending promotional items, magazines and catalogues.

Manufacturing, addressing and dispatching envelopes is now big business throughout the world. In most cases the work is outsourced to specialist companies, with the exception of the use of certain automatic insertion machines.
