Japanese slang for American fighting, Merikan was a fighting competition that matched western combat styles versus eastern fighting styles. Each match had rules, including best of three throws and knockdowns, in addition to victories by both submission and ko.


A pivotal event in the mixed martial arts timeline, Peter Sauer and Kingfish Levinsky competed inside a mixed style combat match in nineteen thirty six. The Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz Ultimate fighting championship fight in 2006 hit all time records in the ppv market, rivaling profits from a few of the world's biggest boxing matches. This surged the popularity of mma, and in 2006 owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship purchased their business rival, the Pride FC from Japan. They combined the fighters of the two leagues and created the most famous mixed style competition up to now.

The popularity of mixed martial arts appears to be increasing daily. Fighters like Ortiz, Liddell, and the Gracie family have worked hard during the history of MMA to bring legitimacy to their distinctive combat style.
