. Even apes, near genetic relatives to our primate ancestors, can be found engaging in fisticuffs with each other. The history of MMA, being an organized sports, dates back to Greco-Roman tradition and continues to thrive at this time.
Pankration is actually a fighting sport invented by the Greeks in the mid 7th century B. C. It was a combat competition with few rules and is the earliest reported record of mma. Pankration was so popular, it was picked up by way of the Romans and renamed pancratium. Rome honored the top pankratiasts with statues and treasure, and the popularity of the sport never waned.
In Europe, during the 1800's, large music and dining halls would probably hold no rules fights. These types of fighting matches started to be very popular, and drew significant crowds every time they were put on.
Japanese, European and America martial artists met at the Pacific Rim during the early last century to compete in Merikan matches. Japanese slang for American fighting, Merikan was a fighting competition that matched western combat styles versus eastern fighting styles. Each match had rules, including best of three throws and knockdowns, in addition to victories by both submission and ko.
A pivotal event in the mixed martial arts timeline, Peter Sauer and Kingfish Levinsky competed inside a mixed style combat match in nineteen thirty six. The Army developed their own mixed tournament 6 years later, the annual Army Combatives Championships.
The Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz Ultimate fighting championship fight in 2006 hit all time records in the ppv market, rivaling profits from a few of the world's biggest boxing matches. This surged the popularity of mma, and in 2006 owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship purchased their business rival, the Pride FC from Japan. They combined the fighters of the two leagues and created the most famous mixed style competition up to now.
The popularity of mixed martial arts appears to be increasing daily. Fighters like Ortiz, Liddell, and the Gracie family have worked hard during the history of MMA to bring legitimacy to their distinctive combat style. Based off the public's reception to this sport, it's certain to flourish for some time.
