The Evolution of Storm Water Management

People originally lived with a nomadic lifestyle. Moving from one place to another, they were able to avoid nature's mighty rainstorms. The trees around them absorbed most of the storm water, protecting them from sudden torrents of runoff. When the vegetation failed to stop the flooding, they simply relocated to a safer place.

When mankind started to live in settlements, storm water suddenly became an issue. Thick forests had to be cut down to make room for structures. The soil, cleared for growing crops, could no longer hold large amounts of rainfall.Unable to evade the elements, peoplebegan to deal with flooding problemsthat threatened their survival, and this problem has persisted until today.

Aside from having to protect themselves from floods, people also have to deal with another problem: polluted storm water. Dust, oil, and other waste materials regularly gather in city roads and canals. These mix with incoming storm water, which eventually finds its way to the nearest body of water, such as a river or the sea. This causes negative effects on the environment, potentially destroying valuable sources of food.

Storm water also eats away portions of land, causing erosion. Landslides and sinkholes occur, burying entire communities. Streams get blocked by soil, creating water buildups that cause destructive flash floods. People have to find a way to deal with these problems caused by storm water.

Today, developments in technology offer various ways to help curb the devastating effects of storm water. Management of the amount of water is important to minimize damage caused by flooding as well as soil erosion. The Greek's ancient canals were the precursors of today's massive underground storm water systems.

These methods of managing storm water are called "Best Management Practices", or simply Storm Water BMP. Aside from controlling the volume, BMPs also manage the quality of storm water. Water treatment facilities remove pollutants and impurities from the water before it is released into the rivers and seas.

In this modern world, storm water management remains a vital part in any community. You can easily spot storm drains and canals in any town or city. People now have a better chance against storms and floodwaters. Although storm water management came a long way from crudely builtwaterways to technologically advanced structures, its purpose stays the same.
