The Exciting Story Of Remington Firearms

The Remington Arms Company is a company made from the inspiration of a man who knew what he wanted

.

In 1816, Eliphalet Remington II believed that he could build a better gun than he could buy, so he set out to craft such a gun. His father was a blacksmith, and wanted to expand his business into rifle barrel production, so he sent Eliphalet to a well-known barrel maker in a major city to purchase a barrel, with the mission of observing the technique.

The technique then was to heat and wrap long plat bars of iron around a metal rod of the caliber desired. By heating and hammering the coiled bars around the central rod, the barrel metal became fused into a cylinder, at which point the rod was pressed out.

After the young man returned home, his family added a successful barrel making operation to his father's forge, in Ilion Gorge, New York.

He began designing and building a flintlock rifle for himself. In the fall of 1816, Eliphalet entered a shooting match with his new flintlock rifle. He only finished second, but his handmade rifle was a success. Orders for new Remington-made rifles and barrels began to accumulate from the many other contestants at the contest and before he had even left the field, he was in the gunsmith business.

By 1828, the operation moved to a site, in Ilion, New York, the same site which is used now by the modern Remington firearms plant.

In 1865, the partnership of E. Remington & Sons was incorporated as a stock company. Over the years, the partnership and the succeeding corporation developed the first hammerless solid breech repeating shotgun, the first hammerless auto loading shotgun, the first successful high-power slide repeating rifle, and the first lock breach auto loading rifle. In 1865-66, Remington produced the state-of-the-art Rolling Block Rifle.

In 1873, E. Remington & Sons embarked on a new venture, and in September of 1873, the first Remington typewriters were produced.

The firearms business became Remington Arms Company. In 1888, Remington was purchased by Marcus Hartley and Partners, a major sporting goods chain who also owned the Union Metallic Cartridge Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Bridgeport site became the home of Remington's ammunition plant.

In March 1888, E. Remington & Sons was acquired by Marcellus Hartley and partners. E. Remington & Sons were reorganized, and the new company was named the Remington Arms Company. In 1912, Remington and Union Metallic Cartridge were combined into one company and became Remington U.M.C. Even today, Remington produces U.M.C. brand ammunition. In 1915, the plant at Ilion was expanded, and with this expansion it became essentially the same plant as the one today.

In 1920, Remington Arms Company was incorporated in Delaware. In order to better utilize the excess manufacturing capacity created during World War I, Remington began to branch into new fields, including the pocket and hunting knives, household utensils, and cash registers. They also started producing clothing as well but in 1931, Remington sold the cash register business to the National Cash Register Company.

In August of 1933, Remington acquired the Chamberlain Trap & Target Company which included a plant in Findlay, Ohio. Its 'Miracle Trap' became a standard in the industry and was used exclusively at the 1934 Grand American Handicap - the premier classic trapshooting event.

In 1940, the U.S. Army asked Remington to work together with them in a plan for national ammunition expansion. Remington was also asked to oversee all operations for the three plants that were produced from this plan. Among the weapons Remington manufactured for the government during World War II was the famous M1903A3 Springfield bolt-action rifle.

In 1956, Remington purchased the Mall Tool Company and one of the products they started producing was chain saws. Then in 1962, Remington introduced the Model 700 bolt-action sniper rifle. The rifle became one of the most successful firearms, and quickly lent itself to developments of many sub-variants.

Included in the sub-variants off of the Model 700 were the Remington 700 BDL, Remington 700PSS for police and law enforcement agencies (the rifle, later renamed 700P, is very popular among law enforcement agencies) and the military M24 SWS which was the USA Army standard sniper rifle between 1988-2010 and still serves among other armed forces around the world, such as the IDF. Other firearms companies designed and manufactured sniper rifles based on the reliable and accurate Remington Model 700 action.

In 1997, Remington introduces the Model 597 rimfire rifle family and manufactures the gun at the new Mayfield facility. The 597 is a design focusing on functional reliability and benchmark accuracy. Later that year, Remington celebrates 15 years of the highly collectible bullet knife series. Also, Remington becomes recognized as one of the top firearm safe companies in the world.

Remington also added the new 3 1/2-inch Super Magnum to its best selling line of Model 870 Express pump-action shotguns. These guns were built with the brute strength and reliability of its legendary Model 870 Wingmaster, but with the added versatility of being able to handle 12-ga. 2 3/4 to 3 1/2-inch loads.

1999 was a big year for the Remington Arms Company. They created the first new centerfire magnum case in 87 years--the .300 Remington Ultra Mag, chambered in nine different Model 700 configurations. The new .300 Remington Ultra Mag represents the first commercially available non-belted magnum. Summer of 1999 begins a new chapter for Remington with the advent of its new television series--Remington Country. Remington also enters the one handed knife business with the introduction of the "Rattlesnake" line.

Throughout the years, Remington has gone through a series of stages that have led it to what it is today. Today it is still called Remington Arms Company, and is still producing quality firearms.
