History Of Agnosticism
The history of agnosticism revolves around a single important event which is the turning point before it became accepted in society. The word agnostic was created by Thomas Henry Huxley who coined the word agnostic and openly declared it during the party of Metaphysical Society on one evening in 1869. Huxley considered himself a freethinker and denied that he was an atheist or a theist. Agnostic was derived from the Greek word "agnostos" which means "to not know" .The term agnostic was inspired by St. Paul's account upon his visitation in one of the temples of Greece with an inscription on the altar with the Greek words "agnosto theos" which means "to the unknown God". Agnosticism may have several categories such as agnostic theism, agnostic atheism, strong and weak agnosticism.
The history of agnosticism was cited on its first public appearance in a printed page of Spectator of May 29, 1869. The principle of agnosticism has gained criticism and at the same time recognition from several known philosophers like Hume and Kant. Huxley was quoted as saying that he invented the word agnostic deriving from the word Gnostic which is meant to be the study of spiritual knowledge. Agnostics neither confirm nor deny the existence of God or other spiritual entities. Huxley pointed out that he is totally ignorant if God's existence is true. But yet he also declared God's existence can also be true and there is no means to prove such claims. And because of skeptical perceptions about deity's presence, agnostics were identified as mere watchers sitting on the fence according to some scholars.
But for the agnostics like Huxley the principle of ignorance has become the safest ground for people who wished not to confer absolute answers about entities. Agnosticism has gained attention and approval from prominent public figures like scientists, philosophers, businessmen and even celebrities.
Here is a short list of some famous agnostics: Carl Sagan, Robert G. Ingersoll, Clarence Darrow, Warren Buffet, H. L. Mencken, Stephen Jay Gould, Larry King, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Andy Rooney, Matt Stone, Francis Crick, Steve Wozniak, Bart D. Ehrman, Sir David Attenborough, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Bertrand Russell.
