Youve just gotten home with your new baby, and chances are youve already received

a number of pieces of newborn apparel from baby showers, friends, and family. There are thousands of sets of clothing out there for newborns, from funny to dressy, play wear to sleepers. But what are some of the best pieces of newborn apparel and where can you find them?

First, a few things to keep in mind regarding newborn apparel: check the fabric. Babys skin is incredibly delicate and sensitive and should not be exposed to certain fabrics such as wool or polyester that may scratch and chafe. Sticking with all cotton and fleece is your best bet. Also, try and avoid any latex, as you wont know at this stage whether this newborn apparel may have an allergic reaction. Additionally, remember that baby always needs an undersuit to further protect their skin. Another good buy is one-piece outfits, so you do not have to continually fuss with and adjust the babys clothes. These outfits are also much easier to get on and off, saving valuable time. Finally, dont forget the sockskeeping feet warm, dry, and clean is a must. They are also preferable to crib shoes, as these have a greater tendency to come off and all the cute embellishments they have may fall off and cause a choking hazard. Instead, socks with elastic at the ankles will keep them in placejust make sure they are not too tight and constantly upsize as your baby grows.

Once baby is dressed with the inner garments, it is time to consider outwear. First and foremost is a comfortable and adjustable jacketpreferably with a zipper so it stays put. A head covering or hat is also a must. This item serves to both keep baby warm (most body heat is lost through the head), regulates body temperature, and protect the babys delicate skull. Hats should be worn in both summer and winter: in summer the hat serves as important sun protection and in winter ensures that baby stays warm and that their delicate ears are protecteda good way to avoid ear infection.

Another good cold weather investment is a bunting. This piece of clothing keeps out the cold, provides softness and comfort, and protects baby from even the shortest trip outsidefrom home to car, for instance. Also, a bunting will fit under any car seat, making it unnecessary to continue to wrap and unwrap your child.

Clothing your newborn is not nearly as intimidating as it may seem. Following these basic guidelines will take you a long way toward having a protected and very cute newborn.
