, is so named because of the mirror positioned behind the lens that directs the light to the viewfinder when you are taking a photo. DSLRs are now one of the most sought after cameras. The reasons behind it are the terrific features with which they come. Lets look at some of them:

Mode dial- DSLRs (and most other digital cameras) have a mode dial whose function is to access automatic scene- mode settings or standard camera settings. Scene modes vary and are less customizable. The common scene modes are full- auto, portrait, macro, landscape, action, night modes, etc. Very high- end professional DSLRs hardly have automatic scene modes as professional prefer to and can very easily adjust settings on their own to fit their need.

Interchangeable lens- DSLRs have the ability to exchange lenses, allow the acceptance of a specialized lens, and select and use the best lens for a particular photographic need. A photographer prefers to use lenses made by the same manufacturer as that of the camera body, although there are many independent lens manufacturers who design lens for different lens mouths.

Live preview- Live preview is the ability to see the optical viewfinders image on the LCD preview. Early DSLRs lacked this feature. This feature proves especially beneficial when the eye- level viewfinder cannot be used, such as in underwater photography when the camera is enclosed in water- proof case.

Dust reduction systems- As the lens in a DSLR can be changed, dust can enter into the camera when the lenses are being changed. After entering, the dust can adhere to the image sensor and significantly degrade the image quality. Thus it is essential to clean the sensor. The best way to protect your camera is by installing a dust cover filter right behind the lens mount. There are other techniques as well, like cleaning with cotton swabs dipped in a cleanser or blowing compressed air. They can be cleaned at home by self or sent to the service centre for cleaning.

HD video recording- Most DSLRs are incorporated with a movie mode that can record high definition (HD) motion video. The DSLRs that have this feature are known as DSLR video shooter or HDSLR.

When you buy a DSLR, there are some things to consider:

Megapixels- The more the megapixels, the more information it can collect on the sensor. With more information you can print pictures at larger sizes without sacrificing its original quality.

Frames per second (fps) - fps is another thing to check while buying a Digital SLR Camera. Fps refers to the number of images the camera can take every second.

LCD screen size- Consider the screen size (in inches) of the camera on which you can view and review images.

ISO- ISO in the sensitivity of the camera sensor to light. A high ISO will help you take photos at night or in low light. It will also reduce the use of flash when taking snaps indoors.
