The Flu Season Fight

Flu season is on everyones mind

Flu season is on everyones mind. H1N1 has made all even more nervous. The Center for Disease Control and Iowa Department of Public Health are on high alert.

Proactive steps on behalf of The Continental at St. Josephs have shown our residents that we are doing our homework and taking their health seriously. In Caregivers Quarterly 2009, Lisa Uhlenkamp, RN, RLHA, and Director of Quality and Clinical Services for the Iowa Health Care Association commented, We know the flu season will probably come in waves...we dont know how bad each wave will be.

There are some things we know for sure. First, we must be prepared. Second, simple precautions go a long way.

We encourage all of our staff and those we are in contact with to get vaccinated. We are also strongly re-enforcing the importance of hand-washing to fellow staff members and residents, as it is the best defense you can take against the flu.

Remember, hands should be washed with soap and water for 20-30 seconds. If soap and water are not available, an antiseptic hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol is sufficient.

We ask all visitors and guests to wash their hands upon entering the facility and to avoid touching their face and others the best they can. Anytime you have contact with others we strongly recommend washing or use of antiseptic sanitizers.

Tara Koestner shared, We care deeply for all of our residents and our staff. It is of the utmost importance that we all do what we can to keep each other healthy.

No one benefits from taking illness threats lightly, says Bill Burch. The entire Continental Senior Living concept is steeped in senior care and longevity. It would be insane for us to knowingly not take every precaution possible to avoid illness and injury of our residents and staff. Our entire concept of senior care depends on us being an ambitious leader in the industry. There is no greater good, no greater goal than to make every effort to support our seniors and those who care for them.

All of us must make every effort to improve our skills at preventing disease. Life is already short enough without simple mistakes like not washing our hands making it shorter or less enjoyable.
