The Four Types of Mesothelioma and Their Symptoms

. After decades of research, doctors and scientists agree that asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. This cancer can arise in four different areas of your body before spreading to other areas.

Mesothelioma is a very specific form of cancer that attacks the special cells that line your body cavities and organs, called the epithelial cells. Together, epithelial cells make up the mesothelium, or the lining around an organ or inside the body cavity. The mesothelioma offers protection as well as lubrication for the organs so that they do not chafe against the inside of the body or each other.

There are four areas where epithelial cells surround your body tissue. First, they provide a lining for the lungs. If cancerous tumors arise in this mesothelium, it is called pleural mesothelioma. This can cause respiratory issues such as dry coughing, coughing up blood, painful breathing, shortness of breath, and fatigue, among other things.

Next, another conglomeration of epithelial cells is in the lining of the abdominal cavity. Mesothelioma in this area is called peritoneal mesothelioma. As tumors in the peritoneum get larger, they can cause problems like abdominal pain, fluid in the abdomen, and digestive problems. Additionally, you may have symptoms based on the organs that come into contact with the peritoneal tumors. For instance, if a tumor presses against your liver, you may develop jaundice and other issues.

Also, there are epithelial cells lining the heart, called pericardial mesothelium. Again, asbestos fibers can become lodged in this tissue, resulting in pericardial mesothelioma. As tumors press against the heart, you can suffer from symptoms such as arrhythmia, chest pain, and coughing.

Lastly, testicular mesothelioma is a very rare form of this cancer that attacks the cells lining the testes. Because of the lack of cases of testicular mesothelioma, doctors do not have an established set of signs for this cancer, besides lumps and swelling of the scrotum.
