The Future Of The Internet

The Internet changes so fast nowadays

The Internet changes so fast nowadays. Just think back a few years and we did not even have Facebook. That's like a staple of nearly every human beings day nowadays and they have even named an official addiction called "Facebook addiction" but I digress, we're looking at the future of the Internet in this article, not the past.

Researchers at MIT have shown there is a way of arranging a network so that the Internet could become 100 to 1000 times faster than it is today. Imagine that kind of speed. A movie could be downloading in minutes.

The brilliance of the idea comes from concentrating on getting rid of the most time consuming part of the data transmitting which is when the optical signal is converted into an electrical one for storing memory.

This research has been going on for at least the last two decades so is not exactly a brand new idea but an accumulation of ideas over time. It is thought that initially it may be costly to implement this but the long term benefits would be well worth it. On the other hand, many are considering "Why would I need Internet that fast?". It is hard to think of a group of people outside of maybe Scientist laboratories and computer programmers who would need or pay for Internet at that speed if it came out at a really expensive starting price.

Again though, switching position High Definition video is taking a large toll on the current Internet providers and their band-with so this might be exactly what they have been looking for. It's never too smart to plan too far ahead in terms of the Internet though. What's here today and seemingly solid as a rock could be gone completely in 18 months.

Another big talking point recently has been net neutrality and the idea of how much control over the Internet the government should have. So far the Internet has been a place where speech is totally free and there is no government placed regulations or global regulations as such. At savetheinternet.com there is a large campaign for keeping the Internet neutral and open.

There is a feeling that if regulations and "gatekeepers" were given control over the Internet, laws would become numerous and restricting and the "decade long explosion of Internet Creativity" would come to an end.

There is two main parties. One who wants gatekeepers which will keep an eye on what goes on online and provides a structure of laws from which people will have to follow. This worked in the 20th century for things like TV and radio so they think it will work for the Internet too. The other side likes it how it is. Decentralized and free. Only time will tell who will win but I have a feeling the Internet will remain open.
