The Generic Medications for Anxiety

Anxiety is a condition in the mind, in which people experience any of these: difficulty in concentrating, fatigue, sluggishness/restlessness and getting worried all of the time. It is normal, but in some cases could affect one's lifestyle, especially if it starts with no apparent reason. Another thing to be careful of when having anxiety is experiencing sleep problems and tachycardia, or fast heartbeat. There is no definite cause of this disorder yet, but there are many ways to deal with anxiety.

Chemicals that serve as neurotransmitters in the brain are seen to have positive effects in dealing with the disorder. These are: dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin. In some cases, medications might be needed. There are several medications used to treat the disorder, and these come in branded or generic versions.

Buspirone

Buspirone is one of the prescribedgeneric medications to combat anxiety. It is typically given to the patient two times a day in 7.5 mg doses each, or depending on the doctor's assessment. However, there are side effects that a patient would most likely experience during treatment. These are: dizziness or light-headedness, fast heartbeat, palpitations, extreme excitement, nausea and vomiting, sluggishness and problems regarding coordination. Some of these are normal, but it is encouraged to tell the doctor any side effects being experienced to be given immediate relief. However, if these are experienced chronically, it might be a signal of a more serious condition, thus medical attention should be given.

Some medications might not go well with buspirone. One type of which, monoamine oxidase inhibitor, should not be taken during the course of medication. Buspirone, when combined with such drug can cause hypertension, which could harm in the long run.

Clonazepam

Clonazepam is one of the most common generic medications for the treatment of anxiety. This drug belongs to the benzodiazepine group, and works through providing chemical balance within the brain. It functions similarly with other anti-depressant drugs such as fluoxetine.

Just like other anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, Clonazepam has its set of side effects. Most patients experience any of these disturbances: blurred vision, drowsiness, weakness of the muscle or of the entire body, congested nose, diarrhea or constipation, nausea and vomiting, and loss of appetite. Other side effects include suicidal tendencies due to confusion and hallucination, seizures, vulnerability to bleeding and bruising, being hyperactive and the like.

These side effects could be very serious, thus, it is important to seek medical attention right away if these are noticed. Clonazepam is sold in the market in tablet form, and available in a variety of doses. Doctors will determine the right dose for the patient according to his medical, drug and allergy history. However, treatment should not be taken for a long time- 9 weeks of treatment is the maximum period for treatment, as the medication is habit-forming.

Fluoxetine

This medication is typically for the treatment of anxiety.Fluoxetine belongs to the group of medications under serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Such medications work through balancing the level of serotonin in the patient's brain, thus preventing the occurrence of anxiety. The medicine is available in the market as an ER (extended release) capsule in a variety of doses, but the doctor will determine the rightful dose according to the patient's medical, drug and allergy history. Normally, fluoxetine works in the body after 4 weeks of medication. Some of the side effects commonly experienced by patients are constipation, sudden weight loss or gain, increased appetite, nausea and vomiting, nasal congestion, dry mouth, and decrease in libido (sexual drive). Suicidal tendencies among patients, particularly those below 24 years old, is not uncommon as well. In such circumstances, patients should be given close monitoring during the entire treatment. To add, patients should inform their doctor of ANY unusual changes in the body, particularly changes in the behavior such as aggressiveness, hostility to self and to other people, aggravation of depression and hyperactivity.
