The Golden Rules Of Presenting
Remember that last time you sat for two boring hours listening to an incompetent
presenter who obviously did not prepare for the meeting? You are not alone. A lot of business executives dread this scenario but as professionals they had to endure listening to a presenter who did not prepare well enough and feign interest and comprehension afterwards. Sounds familiar? If this is so, then you must also be considerate enough to become a good presenter because one of these days, you will be called upon by your bosses to stand in front and deliver a presentation in behalf of the company. Are you up to the challenge?
Let us first come to an agreement that there are no bad presentations; only bad presenters. I have time and again come to this realization. A good presenter can get away with a bad presentation but a bad presenter will almost always be condemned for a lousy and unappealing case. For sure, business meetings go bad because the presenter do not know how to present his case properly. Before you hand out that color flyer printing to your audience, you must first make sure that you have a good presentation before hand.
There are only two rules to remember to have a good and lasting impression during and after your presentation. There is no rocket science here but there are two rules that will make sure that you are on top of your game.
Rule One: Get to know your Audience.
One presentation for all does not work. This is a fact. I mean, if you have a standard presentation for business meetings better delete them from your files. You must recognize that different people have different needs and different expectations. To know what you need to deliver, you have to first understand and get to know your audience.
I fell into this trap recently when I presented a standard presentation for clients. I did not have enough time to research beforehand so I decided, what the heck, I'll just use my standard presentation. Anyway, it made a good impact in my last business meeting. I prepared my hand outs including my flyer printing but I was in for a surprise. I was not told beforehand that I would be speaking to primary school students who were there to learn about entrepreneurship. I made a spur of the moment decision, chucked my presentation and made an impromptu discussion.
The lesson here is that you should not assume things about your audience. Always make an effort to learn about your audience. It does not take a lot of time. Try to get an idea by knowing your audience's peculiarities. Are they young? Seniors? Business executives? Specialists? Primary school students? What time of day am I speaking? Will they have enough patience to listen to beyond 10 minutes? How many people are going to be in the audience? By knowing these, you can now tailor your presentation to the level of their understanding or to what your audience wants to hear.
Rule 2: Stick to One.
Your presentation should stick to only one message. This is difficult for most presenters to follow but it is a golden rule. Before you commit to writing your manuscript or preparing your PowerPoint slide, you must try to understand the message that you would like to impart. This may be obvious in your presentation or implied and buried in the presentation.
We want to stick to one message because the audience simply does not remember much of what they hear. They are easily sidetracked and confused, particularly if the environment is not conducive. Depending on the size of the audience, they can get distracted by almost anything. So as a rule, your message must be clear to you, primarily, and to your audience, second.
