One, the introduction of Ingres

Ingres (1780 to 1867) was a French painter, whose father was a decorate sculptor and academician of Royal Academy of Fine Arts. When he was 6 years old, he began to learn painting, music and sculpture. He followed Raphael in his whole life. At the age of 17, he was exempted from military service due to excellent painting score. Later he came to Rome for further study and admired Italy classical art. When he was 40 years old, he moved to Florence. Four years later, he returned to Paris with a warm welcome because his work 'vow of Louis XIII' created for his hometown, and was elected as the academician of Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Sadly, his classical works were still unpopular, thus he returned to Rome again. He said, 'Paris is not friendly to me, and I am determined to leave here. To seek for the peace, I am appointed as the president of Rome College to replace Vienne'. At the age of 61, Ingres's artistic activities in Rome got a big success. Then with multiple honors he came to Paris again. French government organized a grand banquet consisting of 426 people to make up for the past disrespect for him. At the age of 68, he became a member of Second Republic of Fine Arts and one of the Sharon adjudicators. He got the right to evaluate the art and took a supreme authoritative position in art field. At 70, he acted as the president of Royal Academy of Fine Arts and won the title of senator. His later years were spent in the glory and splendor.

Two, Ingres's artistic ideas

Ingres pursued an eternal and pure beauty. He had made a great deal of in-depth study to the art form and thought the most beautiful line was curve, and the most beautiful body was circular one. Soft circular lines did not produce any resistance in people's psychological visual feelings, so they could cause comfortable pleasure. Ingres found this typical ideal in the female nude, so he made a lot of paintings to depict a rich and curvy female nude. In his later years, Ingres created the painting 'spring', which further reflected a new concept of beauty of the painter. He came to feel the need to create an abstract model of classical beauty with a fine means of modeling. Ingres was willing to call him a history painter, because since the establish of 'French Royal Painting and Sculpture College' in the 17th century, traditional classicalists always regarded history painting as the highest level (the top level was history painting and mythological and religious painting; the medium was genre painting and portraits; the lowest level was landscape painting and still life). However, from the perspective of art history, the most outstanding of Ingres were the portraits and body paintings. But if his portraits and body paintings were compared, his highest achievement lied in his female nude painting.
