The Greatest Hope
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:3-7
My Grandma, Gladine Mahurin, passed away last Thursday at the age of 82. When I received the news about her passing, I had an odd mixture of emotions. I certainly was sad for the loss and felt sorry for my family members who took the loss hard. However, there was a part of me that was happy for my MaMa. I began praying about the feelings I felt and God gave me the following devotion.
As Christians, God has given us a lot of hope. The scripture I have included discusses some of the hopes we have in God. First, in verse 6, God gives us the hope that although we may have to face various trials, joy is coming. Certainly this is talking about Heaven, but I don't believe we have to wait until Heaven to have joy as we conquer our trials. Jesus tells us that we will have trouble in this life, but we should keep our joy for He has overcome them all. We don't have to wait until Heaven to realize joy in the midst of trials; God wants us to experience joy now.
Second, we have the hope of Heaven. What a hope that is! Imagine what Heaven must be like if Jesus has been preparing it for us for over 2000 years. The Bible talks about its splendor, but I don't believe there is any way our mind can comprehend what Heaven will be like.
Lastly, we have what I believe is the greatest hope. We have the hope of spending eternity in fellowship with God. There is no place on earth like being in the presence of God. How much greater will Heaven be? If His presence is so awesome when we experience it here, it will be far more incredible there. God's greatest desire is to spend time with His children. There comes a time when God is ready to call one of His children home. As I thought about my Grandma, I saw in my mind an image so clearly of God reaching out His hand and bidding her to come to Him. He was ready to start that eternal fellowship with her.
We can have that same hope. All it takes is to be a child of God. Accept Him as the Lord of your life. For the believer, passing from this body is about life, not death. It is about rejoicing, not pain. I will get to see my MaMa again when my Heavenly Father calls me to my eternal fellowship with Him. As I said, I will miss my MaMa, but there is no way I can be sad for her knowing she is now home, reunited with my PaPa and spending time in the presence of her Heavenly Father.
