The History Behind Chihuly Chandeliers
Crystal chandeliers are usually what comes to mind when one thinks of the ornate lighting
. But they aren't the only option, especially for people who like something a little more unique. One of the most sought after designs in lighting are Chihuly chandeliers. Named after the glass blowing artist that created their original design, these fixtures are gorgeous, if a little out of the ordinary.
Dale Chihuly has been a glass artist for many years, since the 60s. He received a Master of Science in Sculpture and from there, created fabulous designs in both lighting and aesthetic sculptures and pieces. Unfortunately, Chihuly was in a car accident in 1976 and although he was blinded in one eye, he continued to blow glass. Later on he was in a surfing accident than dislocated his shoulder, rendering it impossible for him to continue. Instead, he passed along his teachings to others and hired artists to continue his work for him, with him overseeing it all.
Chihuly only started with chandeliers in 1992. Before that, he had several series' of glass blown items, from Ikebena series of glass blown flower arrangements to the Venetian series, based on Italian art deco. But his chandeliers have been some of his most popular work, with their variety in styles. Some look like blooming flowers, others have snake like tendrils that make for odd but beautiful looking pieces.
Some big companies and popular places use Chihuly chandeliers in their design. Disney, for one, has a chandelier on their cruise ship the Disney Magic. It is prominently displayed in their main lobby There's a chandelier in Union Station in Tacoma, and of course a lot of museums have them on display. Some have full exhibits and others have them as permanent fixtures in certain wings.
Chihuly chandeliers are different in that they are more there for aesthetic purpose than lighting. Some do light up, while others are merely for show. His chandeliers are often huge because of how they tend to have pieces that really travel, like tendrils or blooming mushroom shapes. They are also very colorful, often using a variety of shades to create a bright, bold look. These styles are not meant for people who don't like to stand out or draw attention to dcor. And yes, there are plenty for sale for personal dcor use. That's what is great about his designs, they are accessible in so many ways!
