The History Of Cosmetic Surgery

Developed during wartime as a way to repair facial deformities, cosmetic surgery has evolved over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries to offer an ever more affordable means for men and women to achieve their ideal appearance.

The development of cosmetic surgery has not only seen procedures become more successful and naturalistic, but also much more affordable by everyone, rather than simply the rich and famous. Furthermore, with improved success has come widespread acceptance among both sexes, with the number of male patients undergoing some types of cosmetic surgery now exceeding that of women.

Modern cosmetic surgery fills a niche for which there was previously no alternative, as women of the past could only rely on strategic clothing choices and heavy use of make-up to cover up less desirable features. However, the need for cosmetic surgery is certainly not a new phenomenon - historians have traced reconstructive surgery as far back as 800 BC, where surgeons in India provided artificial noses for people who had theirs removed as punishment, and even further back to Ancient Egypt, where damaged ears could be repaired through surgical techniques.

Although it would take centuries for medical science to advance to the point where such 'nose jobs' and other procedures could become better understood and properly carried out, this demonstrates that cosmetic surgery has always been desired, and was just waiting for medicine to catch up to the ideal. One of the major breakthroughs in this field was anaesthesia, allowing surgeons to carry out complex procedures with no pain experienced by the patient.

As cosmetic surgery became more feasible and well-known in the 20th century, it wasn't long before regulatory bodies were established to ensure treatments were carried out ethically and responsibly. From the founding of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in 1931 to later organisations such as the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, policing safe cosmetic surgery across the globe since 1970, patients can now rest easy when visiting a board certified surgeon, as they know they'll be in the best hands.

So what of the recent history of cosmetic surgery? Well, you only have to look at the statistics to see how cosmetic treatments are more popular than ever. Last year, more than 311,000 women in the United States alone opted for breast enlargements - still the number one procedure worldwide for women - while non-surgical procedures such as Botox injections are enjoying a surge in popularity as more men and women worldwide are inspired by celebrities, and holding on to their youthful looks even into old age.
