The History Of Mobil Oil

A history of one of the world's most famous brands

, Mobil. The creators of arguably one of the best lubricants in the world, Mobil 1. This company has been operating for over 100 years and has a long history that has resulted in Mobil being one of the world's most well known brands.

Vacuum Oil started in 1866 and the Standard Oil Company of New York or Socony was founded in 1911 after the break up of Standard Oil in the same year. It wasn't until 1931 that these two companies merged together and started out to become Mobil as we know it today. At this time, the company was called Vacuum-Socony and in 1933 Vacuum-Socony merged with Jersey Standard and started production in Indonesia. This was an important milestone of the Vacuum-Socony company as it allowed them to operate worldwide and they did so in over 50 countries before the company was dissolved in 1961 and a new company name took it's place. The company was now known as Mobil.

Mobil 1 was introduced in 1974 as a replacement for the Mobiloil brand. This new synthetic oil is a single grade 5W20 oil and is still very popular and one of the best oils available today.

In 1999, Mobil and Exxon merged and created the company ExxonMobil which is still in operation today. The brand name of Mobil has been kept on most of the products and is still a household name to this day. Although in the US, ExxonMobil has remained a gas company, Mobil in other parts of the world was scaled back to focus on the lubrication market.

Similar to Castrol, Mobil became synonymous with the motor sport world. Having seen how effective sponsorship can raise awareness of a brand name, Mobil went on to sponsor some of the world's biggest sports including Formula 1 and NASCAR. Mobil is now one of the worlds largest oil companies and can be bought in nearly every country in the world.

The company has been subject to many take overs and mergers in its time and is still a very productive company that can trace it's trademarked name all the way to 1911. A long history of over 100 years has resulted in Mobil becoming one of the best suppliers of quality oil all over the world. As the production and consumption of oil remains as strong as ever, Mobil will remain one of the biggest suppliers and producers of oils and lubes until the world's reliance on oil comes to an end.
