The History of Mail Delivery

In today's world, mail delivery is a staple part of the social and global network, allowing people to converse and exchange goods with ease and security. It is a service available to all, and used for a vast number of purposes. Even in this digital age of mobile phone texting, and online chat and e-mail, written communication retains its use in the marketplace and in everyday life. It has admittedly been subdued by the advent of the internet and mobile phone technology, and the attributes of immediacy and economy which are associated with these forms of media. One area of postal services which remains a fundamental part of our life is that of parcel delivery, without which the world would be a much smaller place.

The delivery of mail and packages has a long and illustrious history, with records of the earliest postal services dating back to c.550BC, when we hear of the Persian system through the biography of Cyrus the Great (c.559-529 BCE) compiled by Greek author Xenophon. If we move forward 200 years or so, we find that Mauryan empire in India had developed a service in which the mail was sometimes delivered on chariots called Dagana. This knowledge derives from an ancient Indian treatise entitled Arthashastra which is associated with Chanakya (c350-283 BCE), a scholar and prime minister of the Maurya Empire.

Various methods of mail transportation has been employed over the centuries, including some rather unexpected means of travel. Homing pigeons had long been a preferential option long before and during the Middle Ages, with other bestial modes of transport such as donkeys, mules, horses, dogs, and sheep in use at various points in time. More recently, mail and packages have been brought to its destination via rocket, submarine, pneumatic tubes, and hot air balloons.

Postal delivery has been with us for a very long time, and will continue to be a ubiquitous element of everyday life. Nowadays, we take parcel delivery for granted. It is an integral part of society and of the wider global community, and contributes greatly to the process of globalisation and our ability to communicate and exchange our thoughts, messages, and goods worldwide in an efficient and convenient manner.
