The Human Body Is Like A Walking Temple. Shape, Form, Rhythm And Colour.

That well known impressionistic sculptor, August Rodin

, said: "The human body is like a walking temple, and like a temple it has a central point around which the volumes place and spread themselves."

I like to think about the body as "Poetry in Motion." There are four values of good posture that influence the impression a person creates:Medical- the organs are properly suspended and the blood circulates freely; Economic - mental energy and alertness are portrayed by the way a person stands and walks; Social - a fine balance in standing and moving is always attractive; Spiritual- the glory of the rising sun is never seen by one walking with protruding head and abdomen.

The Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre is a classic example of youthful exuberant motion.

Katharine Wells states in her book on kinesiology that the habitual posture each individual assumes, are aspects of his/her general health and state of mind.

After the nude was studied in all its aspects, my art career took an interesting turn. I became fascinated by the contour lines of the body and how different textures and fabrics related to it. Thus , Dress Designing became a worthwhile time consumer.

Herbert Langfeld wrote in his book, "The Aesthetic Attitude":"There is no intellect that does not desire to create continually, and the pleasure in the perception of a new or unaccustomed form of unity is comparable to that of original achievement."

To create and design, one needs the following elements of art:

Line: Line defines the shape of objects;

Line gathers and brings together;

Line gives direction and movement;

Line devides and reduces big areas and spaces into smaller areas;

Line is expressive, e.g. the Horizontal line symbolises rest; the Vertical line stability; the Diagonal line movement; the Curved line grace; the Concave or Convex line resilience and the Zig-Zag line excitement or action.

No other element is so important as line in a well designed outfit.

Shape: Line defines the contour and gives it shape;

Shape is a flat surface and two-dimentional.

Form: Form is therefore line, shape and depth. In Fashion design, shape and form are synonym;

The Silhouette is often referred to as the shape and form, e.g. the sleeves and neckline. Between Form and Shape there is space. In designing ,the background is just as important as shapes and forms which are placed against it. These are the elements that are changed to design new fashion rages. Line, Shape, Form and Space are therefore rearranged into a new Silhouette.

Yves St. Laurent had the above mentioned in mind when he said: " Fashion fades, Style is eternal."

Rhythm: Rhythm cannot be measured;

We experience rhythm in its most simplified state in the move - ment of waves;

We get the feeling of rhythm in the spiral design of a shell;

We get that same feeling in the rhythm of a well developed human body and certainly in the anatomy of animals and birds;

Successful dress sense is the result of Rhythm;

Rhythm is created by the finishing touches of a garment;

Rhythm is experienced in the shades of a pure colour;

The French call rhythm, elegance;

Rhythm is used by the artist to create a certain mood.

Colour:The Impressionists did extensive research of colour. Vivaldi used it in his music, e.g. "The Four Seasons";

According to psychologists, colour is dynamic. The result of experiments done with colour,I am quoting from the book: "Beauty and Human Nature", written by Albert R. Chandler.

" Colours containing red are affectionate and frank and colours containing blue are reserved and distant. The red type is active, the blue type is contemplative, reposeful, spacious. Yellow is cheerful and sparkling, not serious, nor massive. Orange mingles the characters of red and yellow, but thereby suggests a sort of duplicity. Green has a solid "bourgeois character", unlike red, it is restful, unlike blue, it is jovial...A fully saturated blue-purple possesses a degree of stateliness and depth, which for the many faceted temperament, produce the impression of a mysterious, not easily fathomed personality".

Texture: When the average person makes a choice in clothing, colour and line are considered. The choice of material, however, should be the most important. It is the texture of fabrics that goes with the flow of the body"s contours. It is the magic relationship of anatomy and texture that result in successful apparel . Thus "The Walking Temple " is clothed with dignity.

The above mentioned Elements of Art are arranged and rearranged to create new trends. Oscar Wilde said: "Fashion is the method by which the fantastic becomes for a moment universal."
