The IMPACT Of A Film
Randall Dale Adams from the thin blue line
All of us watch movies. Everyone of us..at some point in our life..must have come across a film to which we can relate to..to which we can connect with...all of us see movies of some sort or the other..Munch our popcorns in the hall accompanied by sipping the huge plastic glass of cola...spend a 'reasonable' 200Rs on our ticket and an even more 'REASONABLE' 150Rs on a package of popcorn and coke. we see people coming out of the hall and expressing their disappointment saying the movie did not live up to the expectations or was not worth the money. Fine. Accepted. the movie was not good. but when we walk out of a theatre absolutely awed by the film and such was the effect of the film on us that we tend to think about it even hours or perhaps even days(in some cases) after seeing it, then we should make it count. The films which have an impact on us should bring about a change, should revolutionarize society. Its not enough to just walk out of the theater...be moved...feel touched...if so...then there should be a change...the fact that we so often come out of a theatre and feel a sense of responsibility or a sudden drive of inspiration towards something we have seen in that dark room is a very strong effect...to say the least..But what is saddening is that, the drive of inspiration or attitude of responsibility is only transient and lasts only up to the limit of us sitting in a car and reaching home. Just pondering about the subject is not enough. We have to act on it...implement it. Well, now people may think what difference can one voice make...what dramatic change can one sole person make...but the truth is...he can...a single person is all that required to have a bandwagon effect on the entire society or circle around him.
TO give you an example I shall say that Hollywood legend has it that the sale of undershirts dropped by a phenomenal 75% in 1934 soon after Clark Gable unbuttoned his shirt in a racy scene from 'It Happened One Night' to reveal his bare chest. OR, in 'Chicago 10', the director Brett Morgan has cleverly animated the trial of the Chicago seven(the title refers to the original eight defendants or two lawyers who were imprisoned for contempt) in an effort to bring the radical historical moment to young audiences. There are other examples like The Thin Blue Line by Errol Morris and Inconvenient Truth, or Stanley Kubrick's 2001 : A Space Odyssey.
So guys if a movie can doom undershirts cant it also end war, poverty, global warming, torture, obscenity and even junk mail??In a TIME poll of 1002 voters about 30% of respondents said a movie had changed their mind about an issue. But what interests me is out of that 30% how many did something physically to change the situation in reality.
Poetry, Auden claimed makes nothing happen but one can almost be certain that something happens, just occasionally when we go to see films. I am not saying that its impossible to make a film that has everyone saying "We must do something about X" but where are films like that. Well, if that happens the power of films will be further enhanced.
So all you people who consider yourselves to be DIE HARD movie fans and FREAKS...think about this...look forward to such cinema and just don't watch it..Do something about it. Can u think of any movie u saw which moved you? Hit your conscience and more importantly made you do something about it?? Can you think of a Hindi film which has had such an impact? Feel free to share it.
IF WE WANT THE WORLD TO BE SHAKEN WE SHOULD START WATCHING!!
