The Illegals From South America

As the illegal immigration problem is considered the new battleground in the United States

, the latest statistics indicate that most of what are considered undocumented aliens come from South America.

Illegal immigration is definitely a problem. These undocumented aliens strain meager public resources yet do not have the responsibility to finance them through payment of taxes. Also, illegals would accept lower salaries for work commitments, thus easing out other individuals of employment. Another issue is that illegal immigrants are far more at risk to be victims of violence and other crimes as their status effectively inhibits them from seeking help from local authorities.

As defined, illegal immigration is done in three possible ways, such as entry into the country without the proper documentation or inspection, or extending beyond valid stay periods after legal entry or through violation of terms after legal entry. While there are current policies already in place to combat and prevent illegal entry, individual states have taken it upon themselves to lead the fight in making life in the country overstaying or illegal immigrants difficult.

According to the latest numbers of the US Department of Homeland Security, the following South American countries have the largest numbers of illegal immigrants in the United States. Citizens of Mexico are estimated at 6,650,000, El Salvador at 530,000, Guatemala at 480,000, Honduras at 320,000, Ecuador at 170,000 and Brazil at 150,000.

The greatest number of illegal immigrants enters the United States through illegal entry. Some estimates peg the numbers at between six and seven million individuals. They enter the United States by passing through the US-Mexico border illegally. Other ways include smuggling of illegal immigrants through air, land or sea for exorbitant fees.

The second way is through visa overstay. Visa overstay occurs when the individual visa holder stays in the country after expiry of the visa. According to estimates, nearly 5.5 million individuals overstay in the country. These individuals enter the country through tourist or business visas and prolong their stay in the country.

In response, South American countries such as Mexico have created programs to educate their citizens as to the risks and dangers involved in illegal immigration. These include multimedia presentations as well as comic books, some of which have been criticized. Also, the Mexican government has made representations regarding the individual state actions regarding illegal immigration. The government has filed amicus curiae briefs to defend the actions of their citizens and the possible effect on foreign policy with the continuance of the effectivity of the illegal immigrant measures.
