A hard drive caddy is a device that is used as a casing for a hard disk. This kind of hard disk enclosure is useful for holding additional hard disks than those that are already built into the computer itself. It can be easily installed into the CPU of the computer or the existing tower, and depending on the number of allotted slots in the tower, as many as two or three additional caddies can be added at one time.

There are usually two female sockets on each hard drive caddy, one is meant for the data transfer and the other is for the power source. In addition to this, these sockets are usually compatible with most motherboards. The power source needs to be connected before the data transfer can occur, unlike other smaller data storage units like CDs, DVDs, and flash drives. Although the need for a power source is a downside to some people, the fact that the amount of data a hard drive caddy can hold is greater than that of CDs, DVDs, and USB flash drives greatly outweighs this downside.

Aside from being able to hold a large amount of memory space, a caddy is also useful for keeping a hard disk safe and secure. Rather than trying to attach the hard drive directly onto a motherboard, the use of a caddy can keep it in place more efficiently. This will also help you make sure that dust or any other particles cannot get into the hard disk.

There are some computers that do not come automatically with caddies. This should not be a problem if you are already satisfied with everything that your computer has, but if you are planning to expand your memory or to change it completely, you are definitely going to need to purchase a hard drive caddy, because changing or adding hard drives is not possible without it.

If you were planning to buy a caddy, it would be unwise to just go out and buy the best kind of caddy. You need to know the make and model of your computer before you can buy the right kind of caddy, simply because not all the sizes are the same. Buying the wrong sizedhard drive caddy will only make you end up wasting your time and money.

So if you wish to cater to your extended hard drive needs, make sure that you buy a caddy that fits right into your computer.
