If you think it is quite surprising that humans have the ability to grow in completely separate homes, cities and cultures at times and still are able to have intelligent and meaningful conversation with each other. A child born in central London and a child born in the middle of nowhere in Canada could meet and share a conversation because they have the ability to communicate in the same language. Amazing!

Due to the ability to communicate in depth with other human beings is one of our most distinguished privileges, we should not consider the ability for granted. Instead, we must do everything possible to increase our ability to have a good conversation with people around us. Think of all the opportunities you have each day to attend to another human being in a conversation. You can talk to rocks, trees, or your favorite stuffed animal for as long as you want and never get a response. Saying something as simple as "hello" to another person can elicit a good response.

One of the best ways to get good at talking with others is simply to practice. Take every opportunity presented to learn the art of good conversation with others. Start by saying hello to people walking in the street. Ask the person who is checking out the grocery store or the teller at the bank what they are doing and ask if they are enjoying their day. Learn to respond with more than one word when someone asks you a question. You will be surprised how quickly he learns about the conversation doing small things like these.

One of the things that are necessary to get good at conversation is really care about people and things that interest them. It will be much easier to have a good conversation with someone if you are committed and really worrying about things they are saying. There is nothing worse than trying to carry out a conversation with someone who has no interest in it. So commit to asking people questions that you really want to know the answers and you will be a step forward when it comes to a great conversation.
