The Importance Of Metal Fabrication In Various Types Of Construction
In terms of industrial usage, metal fabrication refers to the construction or assembly
of various types of metal structures through cutting, bending and welding. This is distinguished from forging and casting, which mainly involved the melting and molding of metal alloys. The metals that are used in assembling metal components and structures are already pre-casted into manageable forms and pieces.
Typically, the forged and pre-casted industrial metals such as steel and aluminum are manufactured in the forms of bars, sheets and plates of different sizes. These are then further processed and reshaped by other manufacturers. The expert fabricators, on the other hand, build structures using the metal bars, sheets and plates into useful components of machineries and buildings. Other raw materials used by professional fabricators include tube stock, square stock, sectional metals such as I beams, welding wires and fittings.
Many metal fabricating shops and companies specialize on certain types of structures intended for specific clienteles such as building contractors. Modern buildings, including residential buildings, require metal frameworks for them to stand. From roof beams to pre-fabricated modular walls, from window frames to flooring support, fabricating metal-related works are essential in assembling these various components.
Metal productions/fabrications are also very important in infrastructure and civil engineering works. These include constructions of bridges, canals, highways, railways, flyovers and dams. Many of the functional components and support structures of these projects have specifications that need to be customized by metal structure builders. Specifications may include load-bearing capacity, types of alloys, shapes and sizes. Metal bars, beams and plates have to be assembled in certain ways to produce some unique structural components such as girders and trusses.
The industrial applications of creating metal components and structures are far and wide. They cover both small-scale construction and large-scale construction projects. Some of the structures and components that need to be fabricated are highly specialized that they must follow specifications that are unique to a particular project.
A professional fabricator of metal structures and components may need to strictly comply with the blue print provided by the project engineer. On the other hand, most fabricated structures and components have general standards and patterns that they can easily be constructed without necessarily following specifications that are unique to a particular project.
Other works related to fabricating metals are necessary to reproduce machine components that cannot easily be found elsewhere. This type of fabrication technique is typically in-demand in restoration of vintage machineries. From vintage cars to vintage locomotives to vintage airplanes, many of the components are not anymore available or very hard to find. Hence, fabricating some of the components is not only necessary but the most practical solution.
