The Importance of Being Physically Active in Older Years

As age catches up on you, you are bound to slow down

. Although you might have a young mind and heart which are still racing, your body will just not be able to keep up. In the later years, it is common to be disheartened and depressed at not being able to do things you have always done when you were young. But this is certainly no reason for you to stop living. Here are some wonderful ways in which you can still keep yourself active, and fit.

An individual who has been fit and exercised through their youth can still be active, although you will have to make modifications. For one, you may not be able to play your sport for as long as you could earlier, since you endurance levels will have dropped. You should play for shorter spells, since your body will also not need as much exertion. Make sure that you stop for longer, and take more breaks when you are playing. You may not be able to play as regularly as you could, so cut back on the number of days that you choose to play.

In many cases, you might have to change the sport you play altogether. Sports like squash are high intensity sports, and require quick reflexes and keen concentration. Your body may not be able to take this strain. Another sport which requires lots of physical strain is tennis. You will need to have lots of stamina, and need to be in extremely good shape. Sports which are more suitable for seniors include badminton, swimming and table tennis. Walking and jogging are also excellent to keep you active. They not only give you the required exercise, but also refresh and rejuvenate the mind and body. Cycling is perhaps the best activity for all seniors. If your health permits it, you must take this activity more seriously, as it is a complete workout for the whole body. It is safe, affordable and extremely convenient.

If you have kept yourself fit, you will find that you are more confident and can face life better. Seniors who are bedridden, or depend on someone else to get around are not only deprived of exercise, but also face a lot of strain emotionally and psychologically as well. With time, you will find other faculties also starting to fade, and you are likely to degenerate completely. Being active, both physically and mentally, will allow you to lead a life which has better quality. You will be able to meet people, rely on yourself for sustenance and also require less attention from your family. You may even have a chance to continue to live by yourself and not have to depend on others for your needs. Being active is your one chance to continue to live the life you led in your younger days.
