The Importance of Employee Recognition Awards
CEOs, COOs, and HR Managers need to realize that employee recognition is now more important than ever. In general, companies cannot afford to invest a lot in their employees upon hiring them. What they do instead is they have a job that needs to be filled, and they fill it with the first likable qualified person they find. In most companies, especially in these hard economic times, you don't even have the human resource department staffed up to find the best candidate. In fact, you are lucky to have any human resource department at all. In many instances, the HR department has been decimated because of the simple fact that there is no need to hire anybody in bulk anymore. Revenues are down, growth is non-existent, and if the company is just stable, not hiring, but not firing, the only jobs that become available are from job attrition. If the company is downsizing then the first department to go is the HR department with the exception of one hatchet person that is kept on to do the nasty job of firing everybody else. When that job is done, that single remaining person in HR is the next out the door.
But let's say your company is somewhat stable and not in the middle of serious downsizing, In this case, you have a need at least to replace the workers that are retiring or quitting or moving away etc. - so you do have some positions to fill. More importantly, you have to continue to motivate the employees remaining that you do have. Don't forget that your employees are people too and they are just as easily depressed by a down economy as you are. A down economy creates a general malaise that affects everyone. In the B2B world, when your employees talk to old customers in a down economy, the old customers are not such an easy re-sell. They may be cutting costs in their own businesses any way they can. When your employees are talking to new potential customers, the new potential customer's attitude, if they have any money to spend, is what extra can you do for them, that they cannot take down the street to your competitors and get a better deal? If your company is B2C, well the market for your products has probably collapsed. In general, discretionary income available for new purchasing in the USA is in a serious negative declining pattern. So your customers are choosing between buying your products and paying their old bills. In the USA, at this moment, this means that they have essentially stopped buying.
All this comes back to reflect on how your employees feel to work for you. Do they get any respect in their job? Do they feel any security? If they work harder than everyone else, will they get any benefit at all? This is where an employer can use employee recognition tools for the most benefit. Employee recognition awards do not mean you have to write out a lot of big checks. No one in the current economy expects any company to be able to do that. Instead, the impact of employee recognition can be achieved by something as simple as giving them a certificate for a free lunch for two at the nearest restaurant that is, by the way, offering these lunch deals at the price of US$20 for two people which includes the appetizer, a main course, desert and drink! When it comes to employee recognition, it is not the amount of money involved that you give them, it is the good feeling you generate by giving them recognition. This makes your employees feel like someone is watching what they do and someone really cares. If they feel like this they will work harder for you
