Most webmasters understand the importance of backlinks; They help you get ranked higher in the search engines.

If a search engine sees that your websites has lots of backlinks for a specific keyword, they will think that your website is popular and authoritative on that topic and therefore rank you higher for that keyword.

Many people will think "I'll just get a lot of backlinks and that will increase my rankings." This idea is correct but has a flaw. The search engines have to know your backlinks exist before they can give your website credit for having them. You may have had thousands of backlinks placed for your website but that does not mean that the search engines know they exist. The search engines will eventually find out that your links exist because their spiders are always crawling the internet looking for new content. But, with millions of websites on the internet, that can take a long time. Some backlinks will only stick for a few weeks or months and if the search engines don't find them within that time frame, your site will never get credit for them.

This is where pinging your links comes into play.

Pinging means that you are notifying the search engines that the content on a specific website has changed and that the search engine spiders should "crawl" or read the content on the site again to get the most up to date information.

So, if you get a backlink placed on a website and you ping the URL, the search engines will be notified that changes have been made on the site and that they will crawl it and find your link faster. If your website has recently received a lot backlinks and you ping all of the URL's where those links are located, the search engines will crawl those sites faster and find your links faster; this in turn can help increase your SERPs much faster than if you were to wait for the search engines to find those links naturally.

So, after creating backlinks, be sure to ping them for better search engine rankings.
