The Increasing Number Of Student Escorts

Students facing tough financial decisions due to the current economic problems and

recent introduction of top up fees may have to make further compromises as growth remains unsteady and the government questions how best to fund universities. Some, it turns out, have resorted to escorting to help fund their studies.

A study by Dr. Don Roberts of Kingston University suggests that 25% of students know other students that have funded their studies through work in the sex industry and that 11% of students would themselves consider escort work. Students understand that as part of escorting you are expected to have sex with the client and not just provide companionship, says the Manchester student newspaper Student Direct. Those that said they would consider escort work if it didn't involve sex are aware that the temptation to sell sex would be very strong.

The advantages of escorting, such as the flexible working times and above average wage are not enough to tempt many students who consider the stigma associated with escorting as being a reason not to consider it. Despite this Dr. Roberts suggest that the moral climate is changing and the middle classes are now more open to sex work.

The National Union of Students has voiced its worries that students may not be getting the support they need in the face of financial troubles, yet the government has paid hardly any attention to the matter saying only that students are funded generously. The universities themselves have been accused of ignoring the issue, using the excuse that it might happen elsewhere in the country but certainly not at their institution, to protect their reputation.

While the universities and government ignores these issues, and the job market remains a competitive place in uncertain economic times, it is unlikely that the trend in increasing numbers of desperate students pursuing escort work will change any time soon.
