Ecommerce or buying goods and services from merchants who sell online have become a common occurrence nowadays. The experience of buying from shopping websites tries to replicate the buying experience as that of a brick-and-mortar or even a shopping mall. There are basically two kinds of internet shopping. First, there the business-to-consumer or B2C purchasing. In this scenario, the buyers (consumers) purchase directly from the services (business). There are also cases when other business contact sellers online for a purchase, this is called business-to-business or B2B.
The internet has been around for several decades now, but internet shopping or ecommerce is a fairly recent activity. While most merchants jumped on the online bandwagon as early as 1990, opening websites for their brand, selling did not begin until the mid-1990's. Today's big shopping websites opened right about that time, Amazon in 1995 and eBay in 1996.
The process of internet shopping is simple. It starts with the consumer or the business visiting retailer websites of interest. Over the years, the process has somewhat evolved with the introduction of shopping search engines and online shopping sites. These either websites give the buyers access to products from different vendors allowing them to easily compare quality and pricing of many different products in one sitting.
If the particular product at the right price range has been found by the buyer, he or she then needs to add it to the merchant's shopping cart. The process within shopping websites vary slightly in this aspect. Some still do not use a shopping website but have an order form instead. Online shopping sites that also function as an auction site, like eBay, requires that the buyer win the bidding battle first before he or she can purchase the product.
But for shopping websites that sell the items directly, it's usually the shopping cart route. This makes it easier for the buyer to purchase multiple items and adjust quantity similar to how a shopping cart in real life functions. When they're finished shopping, the buyer then goes back to the shopping cart to check out. Here, the shopping cart will need to become a secure page to be able to collect sensitive information such as payment details, billing and shipping information. This is also the most common area to see the total price, which includes shipping fee and taxes. Once the transaction is complete, the buyer receives a confirmation email with the product's estimated date of arrival. There you have it, your first internet shopping experience is complete.
A lot of people now prefer internet shopping to shopping from local stores or even the mall as it offer far better convenience. It means no more being stuck in traffic, long lines or dealing with pushy sales people. You can shop at your convenience, anytime and from anywhere. Unlike their brick-and-mortar counterparts, online shopping sites are open 24/7 and caters to a wider audience (as long as product shipping permits).
