The Job Market, Personal Attitudes, And Paradigms
Much of human behavior is determined by how individuals perceive the outside word
. Our perception is determined by how deep our understanding of the circumstances is and what sources are feeding into the formation of our ideas. Those who see only disaster in their circumstances do not see things as they really are or see a very partial view. But what seems like a barren landscape is in reality filled with hidden potential for growth. The same is true for your career, even in challenging times, possibilities abound on all sides. This applies even to how a job-seeker views the job market. As you look around at your career prospects, you may sometimes not see anything that is encouraging. If you gave it some thought you will realize that maybe you have not done enough research to find out all the available options and that your perception prevented you from knowing the hidden reality. The only shortage of opportunity thus is in your mind. In fact, the opportunities could not be greater for those who adopt the right paradigm.
The old Industrial Age paradigm focused on external factors that were mostly beyond an individuals control. That paradigm tells you that youre at the mercy of the economy, the industry, the boss, the job description, the standard operating procedure, and everything else that makes you a victim. If you continue to suffer under that paradigm, your relevance, your job security, and even your personal fulfillment and health are at stake. Although it is true that external conditions influence the choices that we have, there is tremendous power in the way we perceive ourselves and the world outside. They say that life expands or shrinks in proportion to our courage. And courage often comes from knowledge of the possibilities, and the realization that not all of them are negative. The search for the positive is made possible by an attitude of searching for the positive even in bleak spots of life. So focusing entirely on what is happening out there outside of you will enslave you to a defeatist mindset.
On the other hand, if you adopt the Knowledge Age paradigm, you free yourself. You dont look for a job; you look for a significant problem to solve or an exciting opportunity to leverage. You look for a profession you love and that people will pay you to do. You are not merely a paid employee but a thinking, creative human being with unique and irreplaceable talents. You can make a contribution no one else can make.
The prominent business thinker Jim Collins observes, It is impossible to have a great life unless it is a meaningful life. And it is very difficult to have a meaningful life without meaningful work. No matter where you stand in the hierarchy, what the work means to you is what determines how satisfied you are with your lot. It doesnt matter if youre the CEO or the office cleaner or a police officer or a teacher or a lawyer or a waiter or a homemaker or a movie star. It doesnt matter what you do. Your career will be great if you make it great.
