In the past, karaoke can just be done using a TV. There are shows that display lyrics in the screen to encourage audience participation. A lead singer sings while the audience sings with him or her. Though it is just karaoke-like, sing-along shows like this involves vocals whereas karaoke does not. There then comes the invention of music cassette tapes to customize recordings and thus give convenience to the entertainers. From this, a Japanese musician Daisuke Inoue created the first karaoke machine by using a tape recorder that plays a song for a 100-yen coin. But Daisuke Inoue did not patent his invention; he would have been one of the richest men in Japan if he does so. A Filipino inventor named Roberto del Rosario developed the first sing-along system in 1975 and have it patented in 1980 under the name Minus-One. Now, he holds the patent for the device now known as "karaoke machine". He still went through series of court battles with a company who claims that they have invented the first karaoke machine. Still, a decade after the device was invented his patents were issued in 1983 and 1986.

The 90's saw the golden age of karaoke. Karaoke entertainment spreads throughout in Asia and all over the world. There spawned a lot of karaoke boxes and bars in amusement districts, earning the same reputation as those nightclubs which people frequent. Karaoke machines were also considered as entertainment appliances at home. They had built-in songs and can be loaded with compact discs filled with karaoke songs. A usual core package of a karaoke machine consisted of 2 karaoke microphones and the machine; additional CD's with karaoke songs could be added by manufacturers as bonuses. The karaoke machine flunked in the US as a karaoke system; thus, manufacturers found a way to sell karaoke systems as home theater systems to give the television entertainment a movie-like quality. The karaoke purpose went from being the main feature to an extra because of this.

Now, the karaoke machine has been designed to become handy. The machine is now minimized; its size can be compared to that of a book. The remote controller is integrated into microphones; karaoke singers can now operate the machine via the microphones. They can also take the machine anywhere since it can fit into any bag. It just needs a TV to complete the karaoke setup. It also comes with a lot of built-in songs; you can browse its song catalog on a karaoke book that came with the package.

The world awaits in the next wave of karaoke; manufacturers would constantly find a way as the consumer kingdom hungers for the perfect karaoke entertainment.
