This is the largest mammal in Kenya. It is a grazer and a very social one. You will find them living in herds of a few hundreds. They work as a team. The main role of the bulls is to protect the herd from predators such as the lions, cheetahs, other predators. The calves are the easiest targets for these predators therefore in herd; you will find the calves in the middle and the mature elephants surrounding them. The life span of an elephant is around seventy years. The cow gives birth ones every three years. They reach puberty at the age of thirteen.

Being very large mammals, they eat a lot. They are purely grazers. Being very social animals, they take care of one another. In case a mother cow dies and leaves behind a calf, the other cows take turn taking care of it and suckling it. The death of a member of the herd affects the whole group emotionally. They will find the elephants mourning around the dead member. Its memory is very sharp and it can remember incidents that took place years back.

The African elephant was threatened by poachers. There numbers had drastically reduced in the sixties and seventies. They were being poached for the tusks. These were smuggled into Asian countries where that were used to make medications. The trade has now been banned and there numbers are rising up steadily. Elephants can be found in the Masaai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and Aberdare national parks to name but a few.
