After Chittaurgarh fort, the Kumbhalgarh fort is the most popular and important fort in the Mewar region. The perimeter wall of Kumbhalgarh fort is a sprawling 36 kilometer long structure. It is the third longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China and the Great Wall of Gorgan (Iran).

The fortress is shielded by seven enormous gates. According to legend, when the king started the construction the structure would breakdown everyday at sunset. The king was then advised to offer a human sacrifice in order to continue building. Today a temple is dedicated to the sacrifice at the main gate of the fortress.The palace at the top of the cliff, known as Badal Mahal is a two-storied structure divided into two interconnected but distinct portions, the Zanana and the Mardana Mahal. The palace is elaborately decorated with oil paintings. The Zanana Mahal is provided with stone jalis which enabled the queens to see the court proceedings and other events in privacy.


Kartargarh is the magnificent fort built inside the Kumbhalgarh fort itself. Though it has become ruin, but it attracts scores of tourists because of its amazing construction. Kartargarh is known for its 365 temples among which the most famous one is massive Shivlinga (devoted to Lord Shiva) were large number of devotees come because of religious purposes.

Kumbhalgarh is home to intricately carved temples, which depicts excellent artistic phenomenon. The fort has more than 360 temples, out of which 300 are ancient Jain temples and the rest, Hindu temples. Some of the well known temples are Vedi temple, Parasuram temple and Nilkanth Mahadeo temple among others. The fort was inhabited till the 19th century, after which it was converted into a public museum.


The name Kumbhalgarh is also synonymous with Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary that lies surrounding the Kumbhalgarh fortress. This sanctuary, situated at an elevation in the range of 500 to 1,300 m, covers an area of six hundred sq km. The sanctuary houses many endangered species of wild-life like wolf, leopards, sloth bear, hyena, jackal, jungle cat, sambhar, nilgai, chausingha (the four horned antelope), chinkara and hare. This is the only sanctuary of Rajasthan, where you can find wolf engaged in its activities. This sanctuary inhabits more than forty wolves.It also houses an assortment of birds like grey jungle fowl, peacocks, doves, red spur owls, parakeets, golden oriole, bulbul, dove, grey pigeons and white breasted kingfisher. The Sanctuary also displays exquisite flora including many trees and plants having herbal qualities. You can also enjoy a safari trip to enjoy the beauty of the natural habitat of these birds and animals.
