Gas metal arc welding (GMAW or MIG welding) is probably one of the most used welding processes in the world today
. It is a process of using electricity to melt and join pieces of metal together. Using a welding gun, a power source, shielding gas and a constant feed of welding wire it is fast, simple and easy to do. It is one of the most cost effective and efficient ways to weld. It can be used to join long stretches of metal without stopping. MIG welding is sometimes referred to as the "hot glue gun" of the welding world and is generally regarded as one of the easiest types of welding to learn.
MIG welding came about during World War II. It was developed to help produce weapons and equipment faster. It was then used in the post-war booming economy, mostly in shops and factories. 60 years later the general principle is still very much the same. MIG welding uses an arc of electricity to create a short circuit between a continuously fed anode and a cathode. This type of welding is useful because one can use it to weld many different types of metals, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, magnesium, copper, nickel and other alloys.
Depending on the type of gas used, carbon dioxide or argon, MIG welding can also be called "MAG welding". MIG welding is abbreviated for the phrase Metal Inert Gas, and MAG is abbreviated as Metal Active Gas. Some shielding gases, mainly carbon dioxide and oxygen, will react with the welding arc and puddle and help make the weld. Therefore, these are called active gases. However, gases like argon and helium do not have any effect on the actual welding arc and therefore they are called inert gases.
MIG is usually used in shops and factories, because out in the field, the wind displaces the shielding gas, which, ironically, is there to displace the wind. Still MIG welding can be used in the field. However, wind blocks usually made of plastic sheets must be built around the welder. MIG can be used automatically or semiautomatically. An example of automatic MIG is a robotic arm welding car frames at an auto assembly plant. Semiautomatic is when an operator holds the MIG gun and manipulates the weld pool. In automatic MIG, an operator sets up and watches the machine.
MIG is one of the easiest processes to learn. Most people can learn to run good beads with MIG in just a few hours. However, the equipment used for MIG welding is quite complex. It consists of a welding gun, a power supply, a shielding gas supply and a wire-drive system, which pulls the wire electrode from a spool and pushes it through a welding gun. A source of cooling water may be required for the water-cooled welding gun. There are also MIG rod ovens for proper storage of electrodes.
MIG welding is very popular, because it is easily learned and because one can make many things with it. Besides, it is much faster than TIG or Stick welding and it can be adapted for robots. Therefore, it is most typically utilised in manufacturing and in commercial fabrication settings.
