The time honored tradition of shaving is one that has been passed down from generation to generation

. At the time a young man has reached adolescence and is ready for his rite of passage into manhood, many fathers take their son aside and teach them the proper way to shave. With careful instruction the young man is shown the correct way to apply shaving cream to his face and slowly draw the razor across the surface of his skin.

After using a shaving brush to build up a healthy lather of cream the brush is gently pressed against the skin and turned in a circular motion, create small concentric circles that help to prepare the hair for shaving. Once the face and neck are covered in cream it is time to bring out the razor. Starting in a downward motion the hairs of the face are cut with the grain and not against it as the blades of the razor first lifts then cuts the individual follicles to give the person a clean close shave. Even on the neck the proper method for clearing away the stubble and small hairs is to move in a downward direction with the grain of the skin. By moving the razor in a straight line is it possible to avoid any nicks or cuts to the surface of the skin.

For many boys the ritual of shaving has been passed onto them from a father figure that was taught how to shave by his father. Using a hot towel to help open the pores and then churning up the cream with a badger shaving brush the paternal figures of old would then apply the shaving cream to their skin with the shaving brush. While this ritual is still practiced by the sophisticated gentleman, there are not too many people that stand by the proven methods for gaining the best possible shave.

Even with the new technologies that have changed how many men shave, the closest and cleanest shaves still come for using razor blades and shaving brushes that continue to be used by men that understand the importance of taking the time to enjoy their morning ritual. By standing in front of the mirror and masterfully taking the razor to their face many men are following in the traditional method of shaving that was taught them by their fathers. For those that are well groomed and well mannered, the only way to clean up at the start of the day is to rely on their traditional shaving kit and use a badger shaving brush and razor blades to keep their beard under control.
