. Housed in an impressive Neo-Gothic building, this exceptional museum can be named a global treasure as it is a resource for both academic research as well as teaching.
Identified as a public museum of the region, the Manchester Museum dates back to the time of John Leigh Philips (1761-1814) who was a noteworthy collector. Following his death, a group of affluent men got together, bought his collection and formed the Manchester Natural History Society in 1821. The main aim of the society was setting up the museum. It was initially housed in a luxurious property down Peter Street where the collection grew rapidly with many collectors contributing with objects from across the world. It was in 1850 that the vast collection of the Manchester Geological Society was added to the Manchester Museum.
Following a serious financial crisis faced by both societies, the entire collection was put under the care of Thomas Huxley of the then Owens College which is now known as the University of Manchester. After the college moved in to Oxford Street from Quay Street the former location of the museum was sold and steps were taken to create a new building to house the museums collection. The Manchester Museum was thereby opened for public viewing in year 1888.
The museums collection is categorized in to 12 main sections that include ancient Egypt, animal life, archeology, archery, human remains, live animals, living cultures, money, plants, pre-historic life, rocks and minerals as well as changing planet. The entire collection features more than 6 million fascinating objects. The Manchester Museum is an unparalleled base for learning.
