After the college moved in to Oxford Street from Quay Street the former location of the museum was sold and steps were taken to create a new building to house the museums collection. The Manchester Museum was thereby opened for public viewing in year 1888.

The museums collection is categorized in to 12 main sections that include ancient Egypt, animal life, archeology, archery, human remains, live animals, living cultures, money, plants, pre-historic life, rocks and minerals as well as changing planet.
